I remember someone once shared that you should try to make each stage of the painting as complete and visually pleasing as possible, so you won't feel discouraged to continue the day after, especially if the piece is big and requires a great deal of dedication. But not all the stage can be visually pleasing. Masking is one tedious step that I loath the most, side by side with tracing preliminary drawing. Here is where I'm forced to think in layers, which I'm terrible at, and just about time I can remove the mask and finally get wild with color, guess what, I have to mask all those nooks and crannies again! I'm quite a traditionalist in technique so even though I dislike this step so much, masking is necessary to preserve the whiteness of paper, and to make a piece as pure as possible. The result is very rewarding though. One other tip is to tackle the piece in small section and avoid long sitting. One day is plum, one day is wisteria, one day is hollyhocks, and today I'm moving to the rock of summer. Only mask when you're ready to work because old masking will stain the paper and impossible to remove. If you're interested in everything masking for watercolor, look no further @thierryduvalaqua.
