In this post I will introduce 4 checked tones that exist in Taiwanese Hokkien. A checked tone is not a real tone (there are already 8 tones in Taiwanese by the way…) instead, it's a phonetic syllable that ends in a stop constant. You can imagine it using the difference between "fee" and "feet" as a heuristic parallel, where the "t" sound serves as a checked tone.
Checked tones have been abandoned in modern Mandarin but are preserved in many languages that have their roots in middle Chinese. For example, in Cantonese there are 3 types of checked tones preserved, while in Taiwanese there are 4. In Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese, words that are derived from Han characters also share similar features. In the last picture of this post you can see 3 examples of the comparison between TW, JP & KR.
Mastering checked tones is the key to speaking Taiwanese authentically. Please take a look at (and also listen to) the fourth to seventh pictures of the post to learn more.
