Revolving Doors
“A good place is an easy place to walk in and out. Most places are not.” Typically building entrances have revolving doors. They don’t revolve themselves; you have to revolve them. From a standing start this requires considerable foot-pounds of energy. As does opening swinging doors. And sometime there is a second set of doors 15 or 20 feet inside the first. According to engineers this is all necessary for climate control.
The only time they function well is when there are enough people so they can move faster and easily through the doors. The reason for this lies in the impulse to the open door. Most people are not natural door openers. Where there is a choice, they will follow someone who’s opening a door. Even when there are many doors, most of the time the bulk traffic will be self channelled through one or two of them. As the crowd swells an additional door will be opened, then another and the headway between people shortens.
Conclusion: one way to provide a good entrance is to have a big enough crowd.
