[時事英文] 死亡率（mortality rate）*、壓平曲線（flattening the curve）、活動限制 （lockdown）：如何理解這些術語？
　
Language goes beyond a sealed system governed by a rigid set of rules. To fully understand the meaning of a word, one must look further than connotation and denotation, and also take context into consideration. In this case, one needs to examine the social, political, economic, and even statistical contexts of the terms.
　
語言並非只是受嚴密規則所約束的封閉系統。為了充分理解一個單詞的意涵，我們不僅要瞭解其本義與引申義，同時還要考慮整個語境。在此一情況下，應要考察社會、政治、經濟甚至統計上的語境。
　
Does “confirmed cases,” for example, mean the same thing in every country before and during the coronavirus outbreak? What about “lockdowns”? Does it mean that the government is advising people to stay home or is someone nailing your door shut? Some food for thought when reading about the coronavirus outbreak.

People search for insight by comparing their countries to those that are further along in the epidemic. But if the terms are misleading or used in differing ways, the comparisons are flawed. Also, the statistics and vocabulary offer a false sense of precision while in reality, the information we have shows only a fraction of what’s going on. “The new cases or deaths each day are given as exact numbers, and we’re trained to take that at face value,” said Mark N. Officials in the United States say that China, which has reported more than 82,000 infections, has understated its epidemic. Until this week, the Chinese government excluded those patients who tested positive for the virus but had no symptoms. China also doesn’t say how many tests it has conducted, and doubts have been raised about whether it has tested extensively in Xinjiang, the province where it holds hundreds of thousands of Muslims in indoctrination camps. The Covid Tracking Project, run by The Atlantic, has tried to compile all the numbers in the United States and reports more than 1.2 million tests so far, over 3,600 per million people.

It matters not only how many people are tested, but also when, and who they are. Once again, countries differ, shaping what the numbers mean. A few countries, like South Korea, Australia and Singapore, got serious about mass testing early on. They used the information to do ambitious contact-tracing — finding and testing those who had recently been near infected people, even if they had no symptoms.

It has been stated time and again: Italy and Spain have high mortality rates among coronavirus patients, Germany’s is low, and China’s is somewhere between. It may not be that simple. Counting the dead is as flawed and inconsistent as counting the infected. Recent reports say that mortuaries in Wuhan, China, where the disease was first discovered, have ordered thousands more urns than usual, suggesting a much higher death toll than the city’s official count, 2,535. The outbreaks in Wuhan, and parts of Italy and Spain, overwhelmed hospitals, forcing many sick people to ride it out at home. No one knows how many people have recovered or died without ever being tested. And if only the sickest patients are tested, then the number of infections will appear smaller and the percentage who die will seem higher.

Officials often talk about when the epidemic peaks or plateaus — when a country “flattens the curve.” But they rarely specify, the peak of what? And how can we be sure we’re past it? When an outbreak is growing unchecked, more people become infected and more die each day than the day before. On a graph, the curve showing the daily count of new cases has gone from rising sharply to moving sideways — the curve has flattened — and even begun to move downward. That is one corner being turned: The rate of the spread of the virus has slowed down. It takes longer to turn another: the rate of people dying.

（10月26日補：這兩天我分別再跟相關的移工、pink dot朋友討論了事件，稍後將作出進一步的補充。但有件事必須先說的，由朋友口中了解到，有pink dot一方的人受到了猛烈的攻擊，尤其主持受到很多私下的攻擊，甚至影響到其朋友及家人。無論如何，這封信是為了引起公共的討論，pink dot與我聯絡的朋友也在很努力很努力地跟進處理，整件事的發生都是由日積月累的社會結構性問題引起，也由於問題之深遠普遍，行文帶有強烈的情緒，這些情緒引起了意料之外的反應，是我做得不好的地方。在此，請求大家停止一切針對個人的攻擊。）

致Pink Dot籌委的公開信

前天Pink Dot發生了一件令人非常失望的事。我認為籌委方要為此道歉及檢討，也有些問題是同志運動裡值得討論的，因此決定要寫一封公開信。（以下的內容僅代表我個人，完全不打算代表裡面提及的團體及個人的意見。）

觸發我寫這封信的，是一位移工的發言遭到中斷。她僅僅說了一分半鐘。在這場持續舉行八九小時的活動裡，相比起其他人－－例如是議員漫談議會事，誰誰晒長腿、誰想溝誰的花邊故事，或者是歌手高歌幾曲，兼分享自己如何在外地獲邀回港的經歷－－那位移工被允許發言的時間短得近乎從未存在。我無意評論其他人的發言，而是，這樣的差別對待，到底是想在場的人如何理解啊？是想告訴大家，相比起議員和歌手，移工就是不那麼值得花時間嗎？既然想人家趕緊說完就走，那麼一開始為何要邀請人家來啊？你以為人家很空閑嗎？人家也是從一星期裡惟一一天假期裡、從別的會議裡抽時間出來參與啊。

事情是這樣發生的。當天下午三點半左右，三位來自Gabriela HK的菲律賓移民家務工上台，那是一個菲律賓草根女性組織的香港分部，也是移工驕傲遊行(Migrant's Pride)的籌辦團體之一。發言的移工說著說著，她身旁的主持就忽然插入一個問題，問她怎樣用他加祿語說今日大會的主題。我猜想，大概那位移工理解了另一個意思，因此說了一句稍長的句子。發問的主持驚訝地問你肯定嗎，然後另一邊的主持則笑著以「我不會嘗試說這句了，但謝謝Annabell。也讓我們在11月18日支持他們的移工驕傲遊行」來打完場。

這樣就完了？我比主持更加驚訝。明明Annabel的發言還未完啊。只要是有用心聽，就會聽到她在說，移工驕傲遊行由三年前開始辦，她憶述了首兩年的主題和籌辦者，然之後應該就是第三年還有介紹這一年的活動。可是主持人在聽到她說第二年有新團體加入後，就急急插入問題，令她不得不停止發言。不知道主持是否覺得，這些內容並不特別動聽甚至有點沉悶，但是，她們過去又有多少機會介紹這運動？現在僅僅是說了一分半鐘而已，對你們來說就這麼難以忍耐嗎？

移工的發言不花巧，實際上那些內容是有深意的。Annabell說到，2016年亞洲移居人士聯盟加入成為籌辦者，這意味著除了菲律賓的移工，印尼、泰國、尼泊爾等國藉的移工也開始參與。那天，當Annabell由大台區走出來，我們伴著她離去時，她說，哎呀，我剛才其實還未說完，我還要數自治八樓啊那些團體呢。是的，如果主持人讓她數到2018年，她應該就會說，今年的移工驕傲遊行多了本地團體成為籌辦者。

這是移工展示團結的方法。主持人末尾呼籲時說「支持他們的移工驕傲遊行」，很抱歉，移工從來都不是這樣分你我他的，香港社會一直在排斥他們，但他們一直想要融入、想要被接納、想要團結互助。就正如，即使他們被拒諸於最低工資、標準工時的立法進程外，但他們每每在爭取移工權益時仍總不忘加一句，希望本地工人的問題也得到改善。每年五一遊行，是他們令隊伍的人數大幅增加，令隊伍變得有活力。本地的同志運動鮮有提及基層同志的處境，是移工驕傲遊行的姐妹們勇敢地站起來，補充了論述的不足。

為什麼主持覺得可以這樣中斷人家的發言？我也知道活動已經超了時，可是發言的移工也是花了自己的寶貴時間、延遲了去開會的時間在等候啊。每個星期日移工組織者們都是那麼忙，不光要處理自己的私事，還有一個一個會議接續著要開，很多人連放假休閑的時間都沒有，但她還是抽時間來了。到底主持憑什麼這樣去輕視人家？如果讓她說完，可能也只是花多半分鐘或者最多一分鐘的時間，總共也就只是兩分鐘到兩分半鐘，難道Pink Dot的時間是時間，移工的時間就不是時間？

對於主辦方的失誤，Annabell沒怎麼抱怨。對著我說起發言還未完時，她是笑著的。大概是有點遺憾，又有點為著未提到我們這些本地支持者而過意不去。起初我想，既然她沒說什麼，就由他去吧。可是，想到移工的努力，與旁人的輕視踐踏，是那麼不成比例，再想起在Pink Dot見到的種種，憤怒就禁不住燃起。

因為感覺路線有所不同，此前我沒去過Pink Dot，但是，也從來沒公開說過Pink Dot什麼壞話。我想，如果有人覺得這方法可行，那他就去試吧，反正大家各有各做也沒什麼問題，沒必要也沒可能要求所有人走同一條路。昨天，見到有些相熟的民間團體去擺攤，大家都有種互相理解，便笑著打打招呼。

然而，在場內來回走了幾遍，同行的友人談起，慢慢覺得場地的設置很不對勁。

第一，為什麼民間團體的攤擺得離主場區那麼遠？明明主場區內或者附近都有很多空位的啊。第二，民間團體攤位前的路段頗為狹窄，而且擺在通往主場區的路上，經過的人們難以在聚集，即使有意停留也是不容易做到，要麼怕阻著人走路，要麼怕擋著攤位令其他人難以走近。那天我到場主要是為了引介移工團體認識在場的本地團體，可是我也不敢在攤位前站太久，就是覺得阻擋了別人走近攤位來認識團體。反觀主場區內的商業機構，攤位的門面較民間團體要寬闊得多，由於面向大草地，人們可以停留、來回到不同的商業機構遊走，攤位前甚至可讓數十人排隊，這樣的設置，才能讓前來的人有足夠的時間空間與攤位的人談話啊。

我很想知道，Pink Dot的主辦方是怎樣看待這些民間團體的呢？請了人家來，就應該好好對待啊，難道Pink Dot只是把團體當作多元的裝飾嗎？難道邀請移工來就只是想有多點顏色嗎？

籌辦Pink Dot的有不少是同志運動的參與者，很多人是義務參與，勞心勞力，即使再憤怒，我也還是想去相信，這些安排失當不一定有惡意。只是，誰有多少發言時間、誰有多少空間，就是在告訴人們，什麼是值得重視而什麼不是。即使沒有惡意，也確實會造成影響。想起移工發言被中斷那刻的錯愕、當主持人打完場時她再拿起發言稿看那些未說完的話卻又不得不放下，想起民間團體被擠在那狹窄的過道、人們掂行掂過，我真的很想問，到底Pink Dot是為了什麼而辦？

Annabell: Good day everyone. I am Annabell of Gabriela Hong Kong, the alliance of filipino women migrant in Hong Kong. Our advocacy is to fight for the right and welfare for migrant workers. For the past 3 years, Gabriela was the co-organizer of Migrant Pride.
Migrant’s Pride launch its first pride march at November 2015 to promote the right and welfare of lgbt migrants and the community, a call to stop violence against women as migrants are composed mainly of lesbian, equality and fight against homophobia and discriminations. This was participated by almost 300 hundred members of the lesbian migrant groups and organizations, local hong kong supporters, students and advocates.There are 3 main organizations that is headed the event, the Gabriela Hong Kong, the Filguys-Gabriela and the Filipino Lesbians Organization (FILO).
In 2016, Migrant’s Pride theme with rise for pride, rist for justice, to end homophobia and discrimination. Our mobilization total almost 700 hundred. And the Asian Migrant Coordinating Body took part on leading this event ensuring national(ity) participation......

試了幾次都覺得“@#$!@#這首歌怎麼這麼難唱啊！？副歌是想讓我窒息的意思嗎？！？"

在一個“雾锁南洋”的早晨，插班生到新加坡報館參與一個Levi's Jeans的拍攝... Carrie 在化妝的時候找到了一點空檔。熊班長也在場，so... 就乾脆坐在攝影棚的一旁試試看！
