On April 24, 2003, Taipei's Hoping Hospital was locked down by the city government after a series of mistakes and delays led to the SARS outbreak in the hospital. It was truly a harrowing day, which also marked a major crisis in the midst of the painful war against SARS in Taiwan.

During the 15-day lockdown, 57 medical workers and 97 patients got infected in the hospital. In total, 31 people died, among which one committed suicide.

In 2000s, Public Television Service (PTS) Taiwan produced two documentaries about this hospital lockdown incident. Featuring interviews with more than 30 people involved in the incident, "Hoping Hospital" (2003) and "An Exposure of the SARS-Affected Hospital" (2007) invite the public to look back on what had happened during the challenging period.

Now in 2020, as the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is running rampant around the world, we decided to release the documentaries online. The Hoping Hospital lockdown represents Taiwanese people’s collective fear towards the unknown epidemic at that time, and we reckon this is a piece of history that has now become more relevant than ever..

    《Faster Than Lightning: My Autobiography》
    作者:Usain Bolt(保特)

    Faster Than Lightning: My Autobiography
    Author: Usain Bolt

The 100-meter world record holder Usain Bolt is a big fan of Manchester United. How big a fan? He almost died for them. In 2009, Bolt got into a traffic accident in Jamaica while speeding to watch Man Utd play live. He escaped with minor injuries but his car was seriously damaged. The harrowing tale comes in the foreword to his autobiography.

Despite all his medals, Lightning Bolt has had disappointments, fears and even hisses and boos from Jamaicans. All those elements are in his autobiography – how much effort he spent and the setbacks on the road to success.

Bolt will probably retire after the IAAF World Championships in London next month, so perhaps this is a good time to read the memoirs of this legend.

About the writer: Uncle Shrimp loves reading, writing and athletics and hopes he can continue exploring the world through sports.
