Malaysia’s first ever Telegraph Museum, can be found at Jalan Stesen in Taiping… with more than 50 artefacts, you can just explore from the telegraph, submarine cable from the 1870s, a massive stone grinder, old clothing and many items from between the 18th century and the year 2012.. The Telegraph Museum is set up in the very building that housed the first Post and Telegraph office in then Malaya in 1883… I think my friends and I were most astounded and piqued by the 1870s submarine cable, which was the earliest cable in the world… Can you believe this cable used insulation material made from the Gutta Percha tree extract!!!! There are also the transmitter and reception tools as well as other peripherals related to telegraph system. INTERESTING FACTS | HISTORY OF JOHOR | JOHOR AS A MOULD FOR THE MODERNISATION OF MALAY STATES - PART TWO The progressive development and economy year after year eventually attracted people of different races from outside Johor to start emigrating to Johor. In 1864, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar made a Declaration of Economic Independence and founded the Tanjung Puteri Harbour. His Majesty's aim was to free Johor from economic dependence on Singapore. The opening of the most heavily used shipping route in the world in Egypt, the Suez Canal, indirectly gave an advantage to the economic growth of Johor. A telegraphic communication system network across continents between Singapore and London started in 1871 was the most advanced technology at that time. The technology used underwater cables made of Gutta Percha rubber, which was mostly exported from Johor. It was recognised by the British and opened the eyes of Malay states around the region and made it exemplary for decades to come. The modernisation process made to the Modern Johor Sultanate government by Sultan Sir Abu Bakar was seen as a revolution of a Malay government. His Majesty then transferred the entire administrative departments from Telok Belanga to Iskandar Puteri in 1860. The Menteri Besar’s Office, State Secretary’s Office, Treasury Department, Police Department, Postal Department, State Printing, Land and Work Department, Survey Department, and the Marine Department were founded to ensure that the administration and state affair records were neatly organised. The ministry cabinet, High Court and Syariah systems were also founded besides a state advisory council to advise His Majesty on administrative matters. All these government components and the administrative system created during the Modern Johor Sultanate's reign at that time became references and examples for the country and all state governments today. INTERESTING FACTS | HISTORY OF JOHOR | JOHOR AS A MOULD FOR THE MODERNISATION OF MALAY STATES - PART ONE The Modern Johor government was founded by Temenggong Seri Maharaja Daing Ibrahim in 1855 after the old Johor Sultanate and Empire fell. It was finalised in a transfer of power negotiation involving colonisers that was agreed upon by all parties. Temenggong Daing Ibrahim did not want the Johor Government to disappear forever. His Majesty's wisdom and efficiency in restructuring and restoring the Johor Government could be seen today. Johor became a point of reference for the modernisation of other Malay states. Investment was a priority because His Majesty did not want to bow down to the British by relying solely on monthly allowances. Since 1840, the export and commercialisation of Gutta Percha latex to the global market kick-started the credibility of His Majesty's reign and Johor's beginning as a great power. The income from every trade made at that time was between $150,000 and $200,000 Spanish dollar. Johor opening its doors attracted the interest of various races such as the Chinese, Arabs and Europeans to migrate to and start a new life. His Majesty created a more organised administrative system called the Kangchu System, also known as Surat Sungai, in the early 1840s during a mass migration of farm owners from Singapore and the Riau province. The Surat Sungai document became the first written adminstrative document made by a Malay government at that time. The document records were confirmed by the British administration to be highly organised and can still be used as reference today. Every river in Johor had a leader that was bestowed the power by His Majesty to manage respective farms and pay taxes.
