💬 不知道大家昨天有沒有聽出來外國人說什麼呢 ?
🔓 正解為【Let’s take a ride on this train 】

看到大家昨天分享很自己的想法，想必大家都曾遇到這樣慘痛的經驗，大致上可以分為三種情種，都可以用不同的方式再去詢問對方：

A. 聽不清楚對方的話
Excuse me? /Pardon? / Pardon me? / Sorry?
Could you say that again, please? / Could you repeat that, please?/ Come again, please

B. 對方的句子中有單字不懂
What do you mean ? Could you elaborate XX ?
You said ______. What is that? / What does it mean by _____? / What does ______ mean? / How do you say ______?

C. 聽得懂對方說的，但不明白對方的意思
I don’t quite understand. / I don’t get it.
What do you mean?
I don’t know why you said that. （這時候就有點質疑對方了！）

其實聽力是可以抓出關鍵字，通常會由聽懂「實詞」、「虛詞」，來猜測對方想要表達的意思。

☑️Content words ( 實詞）: 名詞、動詞、形容詞、副詞

☑️Function words （虛詞）: 助動詞、介系詞、連接詞、指定特定、代詞

通常會發現，有些字的發音是比較清楚、慢、且重音，基本上就是 Content Words (實詞)

而在句子中，我們可以發現實詞通常需要重讀（Stressed），而虛詞則輕讀（Unstressed），這就是為什麼聽外國人講話旋律存在（Rhythm)。

當然也可以事前透過背景來猜題 (Guess)、預測 ( anticipate ) ，透過框架來解題。到時候也會在課堂上與大家一同拆解。

Corn is a grain with a special place in the hearts of Americans. First introduced to early settlers by the Indians, it has since become a staple of the American diet, used to make everything from popcorn and muffins to corn chips and corn syrup. Naturally, corn has become part of our language as well.
玉米在美國人心中是種特別的榖物。一開始是由印地安人介紹給最早的一批移民者，自此之後成為美國的重要主食之一，玉米可以用來作成各式各樣的食物，從爆米花、瑪芬、玉米片到玉米糖漿皆可見。理所當然地，玉米也成為英語語言的一部分。

Driving though the Midwest, you’ll pass by endless fields of corn, which is eaten by animals and people alike. The adjective1⃣ “corn-fed” is used to describe animals fed or fattened with corn, i.e. “corn-fed hogs.” What about people? If you call someone corn-fed, it means they look plump, well-fed and robust. Ex: Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team. When describing people and places, corn-fed can also mean unsophisticated and provincial. Ex: Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.
只要開車經過美國中西部，你一定會路過一望無際的玉米田，這是種植給動物與人類吃的。形容詞corn-fed就是用來形容以玉米餵食或增肥的動物，如corn-fed hogs（玉米豬）。那人呢？如果你說某人是corn-fed，其實是說這人看起來豐潤、吃得很好、容光煥發，如：Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team.（好幾位厚實健壯的中西部人前來參加美式足球隊選拔。）corn-fed如果用來敘述人或地方，也可以指「未經世事、天真的」以及「守舊狹隘的」，如：Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.（凱倫在堪薩斯州的一個守舊的小村落長大。）

Cornflakes are a popular American breakfast, and if someone peed in them, you’d be pretty mad, right? 2⃣That’s exactly what “pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes means. Ex: Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.
玉米片是非常受歡迎的美國式早餐，如果有人在上面撒尿，你一定會抓狂吧！這就是pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes的意思。如：Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.（老天，不知道今天是誰惹毛了經理。）
Since corn is such a simple and common type of food, can you guess what the 3⃣ adjective “corny” means? If a joke, story or song is corny, it’s silly, trite or overly sentimental. Ex: Dad always tells such corny jokes. 4⃣ The adjective “cornball” has the same meaning. Ex: Martin has such a cornball sense of humor. And it can also be a noun. Ex: Martin is such a cornball.
既然玉米是如此簡單又常見的食物，你可以猜猜看 corny 是什麼意思呢？如果有個笑話或故事是 corny 的，就是在說它們是「愚蠢、老套且濫情的」，如：Dad always tells such corny jokes.（老爸老是喜歡講這種老掉牙的笑話。）cornball 當形容詞也有一樣的意思，如：Martin has such a cornball sense of humor.（馬丁的幽默感實在有夠老掉牙。）也可以直接當名詞使用，如：Martin is such a cornball.（馬丁真是個愛講冷笑話的人。）

Last time we talked about milk and butter, but what about other dairy products? Are there idioms related to things like cheese and cream? Of course!
我們上次聊了牛奶跟奶油，那其他的乳製品呢？有沒有跟起司和鮮奶油之類有關的生活用語？當然有！

Cheese is an important source of protein, 1⃣ and the “big cheese” is an important person, i.e. the boss. Ex: If you want a raise, you have to talk to the big cheese. Some cheeses, like Limburger and Camembert, have strong, unpleasant smells. 2⃣ So can you guess what “cut the cheese” means? If you guessed “to fart,” you’re right! Ex: All right—who cut the cheese?
起司是很重要的蛋白質來源，而big cheese可以指「大人物」，也就是老闆。如：If you want a raise, you have to talk to the big cheese.（如果你想加薪，就要跟老大談。）有些如林堡起司或康門貝爾起司，具有強烈的臭味，所以你大概就能猜到cut the cheese的意思了吧？如果你猜的是「放屁」，恭喜你猜對了！All right—who cut the cheese? （好吧──這屁誰放的？）

3⃣ Have you ever noticed that your mouth curves upward when you say “cheese”? This is why photographers tell people to “say cheese” before they take their photo. Ex: OK, everybody, say cheese! And you’ve probably noticed how Swiss cheese is full of holes. 4⃣ But what does the phrase “have more holes than Swiss cheese” mean? It means something has lots of problems, or lacks many things. Ex: The plot of that movie has more holes than Swiss cheese.
你有注意過當你說cheese的時候嘴角會上揚嗎？這是為什麼拍照時攝影者都會要你say cheese。如：OK, everybody, say cheese!（好，各位說cheese！）你或許也發現了，瑞士起司總是一堆洞，所以片語have more holes than Swiss cheese（比瑞士起司還更多洞）到底是什麼意思？它指「有很多問題或缺陷」。如：The plot of that movie has more holes than Swiss cheese.（這部電影的劇情缺陷比瑞士起司上的洞還多。）

And how about cream? Cream is the richest part of milk, and it rises to the top. So when you say something is the 5⃣ “cream of the crop,” it means it’s the very best of a group of people or things. Ex: The professors at Harvard are the cream of the crop. 6⃣ We also say, “the cream always rises to the top,” which means that the most competent person wins or succeeds in the end. Ex: I’m sure our team will win the Super Bowl, because the cream always rises to the top.
那鮮奶油呢？鮮奶油是牛奶中最為濃郁的部份，浮在上方，所以當你說某東西是cream of the crop，就是指該事物是「群體中最精華的部份」或「菁英」，如：The professors at Harvard are the cream of the crop.（哈佛教授都是菁英。）我們也會講the cream always rises to the top，指「有能力的人最終會獲得勝利」。如：I’m sure our team will win the Super Bowl, because the cream always rises to the top.（我相信我們球隊最後會贏得超級杯，因為我們是菁英中的菁英。）

【✍關鍵單字】
1. raise「加薪」：當名詞時指「加薪」。當動詞有許多意思，如「養育（孩子或動物），種植」：The kid was raised by her grandparents. ；「募款」：raise funds；「增加、提高」：raise taxes、raise my voice、raise your hand。
2. rise「上升，升起；上漲」：當動詞，為不及物動詞。
