When I said I do, I didn’t know I do meant I do in the aisles of IKEA when you’re both exhausted and pissy and annoyed and irritated and soooooooo done with life. I didn’t know fully that I do meant the disappointment of missing the mark for each other, that I do meant losing each other in the wilderness of life and work and busy and crazy, that I do meant sometimes you’re passive aggressively silent fighting with each other, waiting for the other to cave and apologize first. . I didn’t know that I do had a face that was real and vulnerable and brutally honest. I didn’t know that I do sometimes meant trying to find each other in the dark of not enough time and too many priorities. . You see, the thing no one talks about I do is that it’s %#*¥-ing hard. It is not taking the easy way out, it is digging in and being stubborn enough to fight for each other. It is choosing joy in the moment even if what you really really want to do is choose daggers. . It is throwing a temper a tantrum, feeling righteous, then groveling back to say, I choose you. . I know I’m right but I choose you. . The story I’m telling myself is that you are wrong but the story I believe in is that I got you and you got me. . I love you. . So then you take a deep breath together in the aisles of IKEA and let him tell you again his crazy idea. You try not to roll your eyes and instead focus on loving him for his crazy. That you wouldn’t choose him otherwise. . And then he tells you, the thing that makes you love him more. He tells you his why. . And you realize it’s your why too. . We are exact opposites. We don’t always look at things the same way. But I know I know I know, if we take time for each other, we meet back in the middle. . There you are. I see you. You matter. I’m sorry. I love you. .
