「時間にルーズ」は和製英語？
=================================
　
時間にだらしない人のことを日本語では「時間にルーズ」と言いますが、これは完全に和製英語なので、英語でそのまま「He/She is loose about time」のようにネイティブに言っても意味は通じないでしょう。そこで今回は、日本語の「時間にルーズ」に相当する英表現をご紹介しようと思います。

1) He is always late. / She is never on time.
→「彼/彼女はいつも遅れる」

英語で「時間にルーズ」を表現するのであれば、「He/She is always late.（彼/彼女はいつも遅れる）」や「He/she is never on time.（彼/彼女は絶対に時間通りに来ない）」のように、always lateまたはnever on timeを使って、言葉そのままの意味で表現するのが最も妥当な言い方になります。
　
＜例文＞
　
You're leaving your house now? Geez, you're always late!
（今、家を出るの？本当に時間にルーズなんだから。）
　
She's probably going to show up late. She's never on time.
（彼女はきっと遅れてくるよ。時間にルーズだからね。）
　
I can't stand people who are always late.
（時間にルーズな人は嫌いやわ〜。）

2) He/She is not punctual.
→「彼/彼女は時間を守らない」

Punctualは「時間を厳守する」を意味することから、「He/She is not punctual.」のように否定文にして時間を守らないことを表すことができます。しかし、どちらかというとPunctualは肯定文で使われる傾向があり、実際、ネイティブの日常会話でも、上記1)のalways lateまたはnever on timeで表現する人がほとんどです。
　
✔not punctualは口語的な響がある。
　
✔「時間にルーズ」＝「unpunctual」と紹介している媒体もあるが、実際のネイティブの会話ではあまり口にしない。
　
＜例文＞
　
He is not punctual. He always shows up 10 minutes late.
（彼は時間にルーズです。いつも10分遅れで現れます。）
　
Sean is not punctual. Tell him the meeting is at 4 not 4:30.
（ショーンは時間にルーズなので、ミーティングは4時半ではなく、4時にスタートすると伝えてください。）
　
You better get used to it. People here are not punctual.
（ここの人らは時間にルーズやし、それに慣れた方がええで〜。）

3) He/She is fashionably late.
→「（わざと）少し遅れていく」

Fashionably lateは「ちょっと遅れて行く」を意味し、遅れることを何とも思わず、当たり前かのように平然な顔をして現れる様子を表します。基本的に、友達のホームパーティーやバーベキューに行くときなど時間厳守を求められないカジュアルな状況で使われ、遅れることをポジティブに表現するフレーズです。（笑）アメリカではカジュアルなイベントに参加をする際、“少し”遅れていくことは珍しいことではなく、周りも遅れることを気にしません。時間通り行くと、ホストがまだ準備中だったりすので、その辺を考慮して意図的に多少遅れていきます。
　
✔暇人でないことをアピールするため、わざと遅れ、「仕事が忙しくて遅れちゃった」とちょっと格好つけている印象につながる場合もある。
　
＜例文＞
　
Matt always shows up fashionably late.
（マットはいつもちょっと遅れてくれる。）
　
There he is! Always arriving fashionably late!
（来た！いつも通り、平気な顔して遅れてきた。）
　
Most people came fashionably late to the BBQ.
