Known as the master of camouflage, Frogfish have the ability to “mimic” their surroundings in both form and color. Their ability to spend a long period of time being stationary makes them an excellent underwater photography subject.

📍 Pom Pom Island, Semporna

Unlike other frogfish, the Sargassum Frogfish lives among the sargassum seaweed you see floating in subtropical oceans. I’ve seen them from as little as 2cm to as big as 10cm.

The colour of the body are usually mottled and spotted yellow, green, and brown on a paler background, and the fins often have several dark streaks or bands. Believe it or not, they can change color rapidly, from light to dark and back again. The body and the fins are covered with many weed-like protrusions, but other than that, the skin is smooth without dermal spines.

Today I show you a photo of a Sargassum Frogfish on its own swimming in the blue. Tomorrow I will post another one in the sargassum seaweed and see if you can spot it.

ปลาคางคก (อังกฤษ: Toadfish, Frogfish) เป็นวงศ์ของปลาทะเลวงศ์หนึ่ง ในอันดับ Batrachoidiformes และวงศ์ Batrachoididae ซึ่งมีเพียงวงศ์เดียวเท่านั้นที่อยู่ในอันดับนี้

ถูกเรียกชื่อนี้เนื่องจากมีสีที่ไม่เป็นระเบียบ ดูสกปรกเลอะเทอะดูคล้ายกับคางคกหรือกบ (คำว่า "Batrachus" มาจากภาษากรีกคำว่า βατραχος (batrakhos) หมายถึง "กบ") มีอยู่ด้วยกัน 79ชนิด ใน 21 สกุล ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะอาศัยอยู่ในทะเล ในส่วนของการแพร่กระจายพันธุ์จะพบได้บ้างในเขตน้ำกร่อย และใน สกุล Thalassophryne จะมีชนิดที่อาศัยอยู่ในน้ำจืด ในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ คือชนิด T. amazonica
