❝ 2019 年的這一天，一名在美香港留學生於校報上寫道：我來自香港，不是中國。

那是一篇美國愛默生學院校報的專欄投書，標題為〈I am from Hong Kong, not China〉，作者是當時正在該校主修新聞的學生許穎婷。她以英文名 Frances Hui 在校報 The Berkerley beacon 的專欄「Person of Color」發表這篇稿件，文章以英國殖民香港至 1997 回歸起筆，並說明當時中國政府為避免回歸所造成的恐慌，承諾一國兩制、五十年不變的政治背景。

更前一年，她參加校園的秋季迎新，校方在學員名單上將她的家鄉列為「Hong Kong, China」（中國香港），這令許穎婷感到不滿。她寫道，在中國留學生多於香港留學生的愛默生校園裡：「這個舉措或許順應了校園裡的中國學生，但也讓我了解到本校對這個議題不夠謹慎。」（This move might flatter most of the Chinese students at Emerson, yet it upsets me to see how unaware the college is to this topic.）

文中也提到台灣學生的類似處境：「不像香港，台灣和中國幾乎沒有政府運作的連結性，甚至擁有民選總統、縣市長、立法委員的權利，然而，台灣人與香港人面對著相同的身份認同危機。」

這不是許穎婷第一次就香港議題發聲。她也是如今已解散的香港學民思潮成員，參與街頭運動近七年。文章發表後，大量正反意見湧入校報網站留言區，「Where is Hong Kong? In China right? That makes you Chinese.」「Thank you for speaking my mind.」⋯⋯，許穎婷則在連登討論區與臉書發表數篇澄清與正式聲明，提到自己撰寫這篇投書的心路：

「上學期，我搭巴士回家，身旁坐著一位亞裔男性，他問我來自哪裡，是不是來自中國，我回答我來自香港，他忽然暴怒，試著說服我香港等於中國，並強迫我承認我是個中國人。」

「⋯⋯我試著忽略他，但他不斷對我吼叫，所以我吼了回去：『我不明白為什麼你試圖修正我的身份。我的身份認同是我的自由。』」

隔年，許穎婷自愛默生學院畢業，短暫回港。期間，她成為了「我們是香港人」（We The Hongkongers）組織的創辦人之一，為被送中十二港人發聲，也在白宮發起杯葛 2022 北京奧運的行動。然而，去年 12 月，許穎婷在 Facebook 發表自己離港的消息：

「參與社運八年，最折磨我的，是要接受在這裡認識的人，隨時都會離開或者消失的現實。⋯⋯當初那個穿着校裙、在街頭搞下學運的我又怎會料到，今日離開的會是自己。」

至今，許穎婷的 Facebook 個人檔案依然掛著「author of "I am from HK, not China"」，讓人不斷想起那篇文章令人備感矛盾又飽含掙扎的第一個句子：

巴結、諂媚

flatter
及物動詞，主詞可以是人或非人，受詞大多是人或與自我相關的名詞(e.g.,ego,pride)，主動及被動語態皆常用，表示人為刻意地巴結，使人高興。被動語詞則表示某事情使主詞心中喜悅得意或受寵若驚。若受詞違反身代名詞則表示自我陶醉的想法。

insinuate
正式用字，指長時間以不真實的友善或誠意逐漸贏得信任或感情。另外也有表示給予負面暗示，或慢慢擠入一個狹窄的空間。

fawn
不及物動詞，表示為了得到好處而給予不真誠的善意或稱讚，後面常接over或on。另外也指小狗搖尾乞憐，名詞的意思是幼鹿而不是巴結的意思。
