Happy Lantern/Yuanxiao festival!
This is the day in Taiwan we celebrate the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year. On this day, we gather with family, eat yuan xiao (big boiled rice balls with sesame or peanut fillings) or tang yuan 湯圓 (smaller rice balls) - but ideally, you should eat yuan xiao.
To celebrate the Yuanxiao festival this year I created some beautiful boobie tang yuan. As you might know, I recently started a small craft business making clay boobs, and whilst I was making those boobs I suddenly had the idea: why not make some edible ones?
And here are the results :))) Making boobie tang yuan was really fun and comforting, but cooking them was quite stressful - the nipples are really fragile.
I used brown sugar to dye the dough for the nipples. If you prefer other colours, you can also try beetroot or cocoa powder.
The two main ingredients of tang yuan are glutinous rice flour and water. The ratio is around 100g flour: 75g water. After you mix them into a smooth dough, tear a small piece of the dough and boil it for 1-2 mins.
This small piece of preboiled dough is called "the mother dough" 粄媽. Mix the mother back into the rest of the dough until it is fully blended. The tang yuan dough is then ready to cut, shape and cook.
You can be creative making any shapes you like or keep it simple and make some small rice balls. Either way, they will turn out delicious :)
How to cook the tang yuan: cook them in boiling water until they are floating. You can eat them with hot sugar water, sweet red bean soup, milk or any other liquid.
