Taiwan is like a diamond in Asia: Veteran educator Doris M. Brougham

“Taiwan is like a diamond in Asia,” U.S. educator and the founder ( ) of “Studio Classroom,” Doris M. Brougham, said on Wednesday.

“The Diamond is very small, but diamonds shine all around,” she added.

Doris M. Brougham, who has been working in Taiwan for more than 70 years, gave a speech at the opening event of the exhibition ( ) “Foreigners Love Taiwan” organized ( ) by the Taipei City Archives on Wednesday at the West Benevent Square ( ).

Echoing ( ) the theme of the exhibition, Brougham, 95, said she has stayed in Taiwan for more than 70 years and recalled ( ) that when she first came to Taiwan, the land was still developing and many people were facing illnesses.

The veteran educator explained that “the great thing about Taiwan is that people are very willing ( ) to change and to learn.”

She added that Taiwan is a beautiful place and that although “there are many beautiful places around the world, the place is not the most important thing, the most important thing is the people.”

The 95-year-old who has dedicated ( ) several decades to English education in Taiwan amusingly ( ) shared that buffaloes ( ) could even be seen on Zhongshan Road when she first arrived in Taiwan.

She recalled that she learned to speak Mandarin, Taiwanese, and even some indigenous ( ) languages. Yet, she stressed ( ) that the most important thing is to be able to communicate no matter what language we speak.

And we all communicate with each other based on the connection that we are all part of this beautiful island, she remarked ( ).

Brougham ended her speech by stressing that Taiwanese people are very tolerant ( ), and those who have been here all agree that Taiwanese people are very friendly.

“No matter what languages we speak, we are all people living in Taiwan and we are all Taiwanese.”

The “Foreigners Love Taiwan’ exhibition will open from March 10 to April 8, between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

‘The exhibition features three major sections ( ): “Foreigners Who Love Taiwan,” “Sentiments Beyond 100 Years,” and “High-Five Love Taiwan,” featuring ( ) the stories of foreigners who have made selfless ( ) contributions to Taiwan, such as Mackay, Marjorie Ingeleiv, Robert Swinhoe, Sidney Barton and Marjorie Landsborough, Yoichi Hatta and more.

資深教育家彭蒙惠女士 讚許台灣如鑽石般瑰麗

「台灣就像顆亞洲的鑽石，雖然面積小，但各個角落都光彩奪目，散發耀眼光芒。」空中英語教室創辦人彭蒙惠女士形容道。

在台灣深耕超過70年的彭蒙惠於週三上午參加由台北市立文獻館所舉辦位在西本願寺廣場的「吾愛台灣－愛台灣的外國人特展」開幕式活動。

呼應此次特展主題，高齡95歲的彭蒙惠表示，自己待在台灣超過70年，她回想到剛來台灣時，這片土地還在發展中，許多人面臨著病痛，在二戰結束的大環境下，台灣相較於國外復甦的更快。

彭蒙惠直截了當地點出，「台灣最大優點就是人們非常願意改變、願意學習。」

她也提到，台灣是個美麗的地方，儘管「全世界有非常多很美的地方，但地方不是最要緊的，最重要的是人。」

彭蒙惠女士奉獻台灣英語教育超過一甲子的時間，她逗趣地分享道，在她初來乍到的時代，中山路上甚至還能看到水牛在逛大街。
她表示，自己不但會說中文、閩南語、甚至還會說原住民語，然而，不管講什麼語言，最重要的是我們要能溝通，而大家彼此之間溝通連結就建立在我們都是這個美麗島嶼的一份子。

最後，她強調，臺灣人包容度非常高，且來過寶島的人都一致認同台灣人非常友善。

「吾愛台灣——愛台灣的外國人特展」即日起到4月8日早上十點到下午五點開放民眾前往參觀。展覽分為三大展區分別是「愛台灣的外國人們」、「超越百年的情感」、「High-Five愛台灣」，展出馬偕、白寶珠、斯文豪、巴爾敦、蘭大衛與連瑪玉、八田與一等等對台灣做出無私貢獻的外國人們的事蹟。

我國因莫德納疫苗無法穩定到貨，除原本優先接種疫苗名單第一至第三類人員和孕婦，仍維持間隔28天施打第二劑外，其他都宣佈推遲為間隔10至12週。雖然已是同島不同命，但現在等第二劑的民眾更是焦慮，因為到底能不能在12週內順利完成接種得到足夠的保護力，竟然也得不到政府的保證？在此提醒中央疫情指揮中心，到目前為止找得到有關莫德納疫苗施打的官方指引中，第二劑都是建議4週或6週；就算有疫苗限制，WHO也寫明間隔最長也就是12週！

有關莫德納接種第二劑應該間隔多久，美國CDC和WHO網站寫得很清楚。美國CDC認為間隔為4週，最長為6週，超過6週才接種第二劑的有效性訊息有限。WHO也是建議間隔4週，可延長至6週；若疫苗供應嚴重限制的國家，為提高第一劑的覆蓋率，可考慮將第二劑疫苗延遲至最長12週；建議遵守完整接種時間表，而且兩次接種不建議混打。

Accordingly, countries facing a high incidence of COVID-19 combined with severe vaccine supply constraints could consider delaying the second dose up to 12 weeks in order to achieve a higher first dose coverage in high priority populations.
Compliance with the full schedule is recommended and the same product should be used for both doses.

Facing financial problems during the fighting periods against the pandemic

Dr Tan Chuan Hong: Welcome to free registration for attending 711 Mandarin Personal Financial Planning Forum.

The Chairman of the Malaysian Financial Planning Council Penang Chapter, Dr. Tan Chuan Hong urged the public to register to join the forum which will be held on July 11 (Sunday) at 2:30 pm. The forum “Knowledge, Attitude and Implementation of Personal Financial Planning during the Fighting Period against the Pandemic" is organised by Penang Chinese Town Hall Youth together with live broadcaster "Ling Listening to Your Heart".

He said that during the fighting period of more than a year against the pandemic, many people are facing financial pressures and suffering from mental illnesses such as depression, and there is a gradual increase in them.

Dr Tan Chuan Hong said that beside public hope that the government can give more assistance and revitalization packages to assist them, the council also hopes to provide more correct and positive financial management knowledge through this Personal Financial Planning forum. So that, the public can have a broader and long-term vision to deal with their own financial problems, whether it is to increase income and reduce expenditure, relieve debt pressure, prudent and smart investment or asset allocation and other arrangements as well as have a better understanding and wise decision-making.

"In terms of financial management attitude, we should handle financial crisis more carefully, and at the same time avoid overconfidence and fluke mentality to seek for opportunities of rapid gaining investment.”

Dr Tan Chuan Hong hopes that through this Personal Financial Planning forum, people can have a more rational attitude and strive to reduce emotional consumption when implementing their own money and avoid falling into investment scams with smarter financial management.

In addition, Penang Chinese Town Hall Youth YouTalk Online Bureau Chief said that the online live broadcast sharing session planned by Penang Chinese Town Hall Youth will mainly discuss about public welfare content related to citizens' awareness.

This is the sixth event which was also co-organized by the Penang Chapter of MFPC collaborated with famous artist Cindy Po 傅丽玲 ; and an interview will be carried out among Deputy President of Malaysian Financial Plaining Council Dr Chong Kok Fei who is also a Financial Education Manager of AKPK together with Chairman of MFPC Penang Chapter and Certified MFPC Trainer Dr Tan Chuan Hong.

今天送給大家這首阿根廷探戈舞曲的代表，也是全世界樂迷所最為熟知而深深愛上的探戈旋律。
很多電影都不約而同引用了這一段華麗而動人的探戈旋律作為音樂背景，作為影片中絢麗的亮點，
最為人所熟知的就是在電影女人香，這隻舞曲也是電影史上最經典的探戈片段之一。

歌曲中原本是寫出對情人之間錯綜複雜、難以割捨的惋惜，
但是看了電影後，我覺得探戈好像被賦予了更深的意義。

Por Una Cabeza有個很好的中文譯名叫做一步之遙，面對生活中的困境我們很多時候會望而卻步，
如同電影中的主角會有孤獨會有迷茫，會想抽身會想放棄，但電影告訴我們人生就像探戈舞曲一樣不應該真正停步。

在揣摩電影還有背後帶來的人生意義啟發的同時，也希望可以兼顧探戈舞曲的風格（好難）

Here comes cover of the day: the classical music for Argentine tango, and it is also the well known melody deeply loved by fans all over the world.
This beautiful piece of music was showed up in many movies as the background music, among which is the scent of a woman, and was regarded as the brilliant highlight in the film.

The song was at first about the intricate and inseparable love between lovers.
But after watching the movie, I believe tango was given a deeper meaning about our lives.
Tango is not afraid of making mistakes, for you can start over. Tango is not afraid of ending, because you can dance again. So at the moment I realized that our life is just like the endless tango.

TBH, there's a well translated Chinese meaning for Por Una Cabeza, called within a stone's throw.
When facing difficulties in life, we are often discouraged, of course, but just as the characters in the movie who would at times be lonely and confused, and others want to go away and give up, the movie was telling us that life should not just stop there.

“你有什么用？” (Useless) is PongPong’s third songwriting project with their fans after “不觉丢脸吗 (Aren’t you embarrassed)” , a collaborative project with fans, which went viral on the Internet. Reported by various Taiwanese media, their previous project has gained 1,160,000 views on their YouTube channel. After the success, PongPong is back with their latest single entitled “你有什么用？” (Useless) , a Mandopop ballad hit.

The track showcases PongPong’s influence of R&B elements like R&B vocals, jazz piano, backing vocals and R&B chords. With the first project themed with hate comments, “你有什么用？” (Useless) surrounds the theme of “giving up”. The lyrics were made solely from fans' comments, which gave a voice for those who felt depressed or heartbroken in life.

The chorus features fans’ lyrics like, “You’re useless.” “Hiding in a dark corner.” “No one would understand your feelings.” it could be overwhelming to listen. However, PongPong believes this piece would be a medium to heal the broken-hearteds by showing them that they are not alone. The song ends with “There’s always a rainbow after the rain” . The sibling duo wanted this track to be a beacon of hope to their fans who are facing hardships and battling everyday.
