Have been struggling with this painting since day 1, but today I had a good moment with it. Got new pigments coming in from Firenze this week and ofcourse I couldn't wait to try them. Pigments behave differently from watercolor. With watercolor I'm confident that the color will never betray me, it stays truthful to what the eyes see and I can have full control over it. Pigments, on the other hand, has the element of surprise. The color in raw powder form is different when mixed with water, even more different on paper, and can be something else when dried up. Exactly what happened with this shade of yellow I put on the apricot. Expected a pale, neutral yellow that'd be close to potato skin but instead when dried up it gives out a glowing chalky white. Even more bizarre, the shade varies according other color it interacts with. Combined with drip-in technique, the outcome is absolutely out of control, but so far I find it very much interesting and probably it will lead to what I have been soughting after. A soft glow that falls in harmony with the deep shade of paper and can heighten the vibrancy of other colors. So far I have no idea what this painting would become, but after days of struggle I finally have a good feeling about it.
