[Beijing] The Palace of Abstinence (斋宫), located near the west entrance of the Temple of Heaven (天坛), is the place where the emperor from both Ming and Qing dynasty observe abstinence from pleasure before taking part in the sacrifices rituals to the heaven. It is encircled by two walls and a moat to further ensure the safety of the emperor. The emperor were required to hold a three-day fasting during Spring, Summer and Winter before each ceremony, before this, they would also need to spend another two days of abstinence in the Forbidden City before coming to the Temple of Heaven. During these few days, he could not drink wine or think about sex (impurity), he could only eat vegetables but without garlic or onions, he also could not have any form of entertainment, nor could he handle any state affairs. It is a bowl of pristine forest encircled by insurmountable cliffs and steep slopes up to 1,500m in height. The whole basin is a single water catchment drained by numerous tributaries of the Maliau River. While the local Murut people have known about the area, it has remained relatively untouched by the Western world for centuries. It was not until 1988 that a major scientific expedition explored this virtually self-contained ecosystem.
