Daddy wanted to share today that our little remote kampung Long Peluan, in ulu Baram Sarawak, planted 16 gensurai trees to commemorate 16 September; the trees will prevent landslides on the river banks and the fruits of the tree are the favourite food of ikan empurau

One of our Kenyah friends shared with us:
“A lot of that trees along the banks of Baram and tributaries have been cut down to make lesung by longhouses dwellers up to 1970s.
These trees were planted generations ago by a local giant family. Legend has it that the giant family was melikat (angel) sent by God” ☁️

Ranked the world’s most unaffordable housing market, Hong Kong has long been struggling with a severe shortage of public housing as the number of applications and the waiting time keep breaking records. While public housing apartments are highly sought after by urban dwellers of all ages, not many are aware of the unique features and historical development of these estates.

Iain Cocks fell in love with the city’s public housing estates when he moved to Hong Kong from London 13 years ago. The kindergarten teacher often photographs the estates near his workplace during the week and visits those further out on his days off. Cocks' shots of urban density carry a style reminiscent of the late German photographer Michael Wolf. Apart from sharing his pictures on Instagram (@gaatzaat), the Englishman also keeps a record that chronicles Hong Kong’s public housing development over the years.

Ma Shi Po Village, one of the villages by Ng Tung River, has been at the heart of the land justice movement against the northeast New Territories development plan in Hong Kong.

While it has brought together villagers who strive to safeguard their homes and people concerned about land development and local farming, the taste of locally grown vegetables and an alternative lifestyle are considered gems to urban dwellers.

Mapopo Community Farm in Ma Shi Po Village located in Luen Wo Hui, Fanling is where a number of disputes have occurred during clearance of farmland.

Owner Becky Au said the farm has supported her family for three generations. “I love telling stories about this village and showing people that Hong Kong has its own agricultural sector and can grow its own vegetables.”
