【語言學視角】從疫苗新聞看 chunk-based vs. rule-based 英語學習法

過去40年的英語習得研究（不管是語言學派、認知派、神經派、心理派、還社會文化派)都同意一件事情：語言學習的核心有兩塊，一塊是 #規則導向、一塊是 #語塊導向。

白話文：不管你今天學的是聽、說、讀、寫、商業英語簡報術、email 寫作、學術寫作、還是 small talk，都不脫離這2個導向。

拿「疫苗」相關的英文來說，以下這種「零散」的方式學習，對英文學習的意義不大。

vaccine (n.) 疫苗 (看到 get vaccinated 就哭了)
immune (a.) 免疫的

但我們可以用 chunk-based 和 rule-based 兩個層面，一起學習：

◼︎ Chunk-based

・side-effects 副作用: 沒有明顯的副作用是 no obvious side effects? (應該是 no major side effects)

・domestic / local / domestically-developed vaccine 國產疫苗
・get vaccinated 接種疫苗
・administer XX doses / shots of... 施打～劑
・develop a fever 發燒

◼︎ Rule-based

1️⃣「發燒」，最經典的中式英文就是 have fever 或 develop fever
(中文很難想像發燒可以數，正確是 have / develop a fever)

2️⃣ offer protection “against” severe disease 可預防重症 (這邊的 against 用法，需要對於英文介系詞概念性的理解，很難完全用背的，也會是罩門之一)

✔︎ 年齡 65 歲以上的受試者的數量不足：
There is a shortage of subjects aged 65 and above.

這句話要能產出，必須要有 rule-based 和 chunk-based 兩個面向都有良好的基礎。

Is it possible to predict who will develop Alzheimer’s disease simply by looking at writing patterns years before there are symptoms? According to a new study by IBM researchers, the answer is yes. And, they and others say that Alzheimer’s is just the beginning. People with a wide variety of neurological illnesses have distinctive language patterns that, investigators suspect, may serve as early warning signs of their diseases.

The researchers examined the subjects’ word usage with an artificial intelligence program that looked for subtle differences in language. It identified one group of subjects who were more repetitive in their word usage at that earlier time when all of them were cognitively normal. These subjects also made errors, such as spelling words wrongly or inappropriately capitalizing them, and they used telegraphic language, meaning language that has a simple grammatical structure and is missing subjects and words like “the,” “is” and “are.”

研究人員利用一個人工智慧程序，檢查受試者的詞彙使用情況，尋找語言上的細微差別。他們鑒定出一組受試者，在早期所有人的認知能力都正常的情況下，他們的用詞重複情況更為嚴重。這些測試對象還會犯一些錯誤，比如拼寫錯誤或者大寫使用不當，而且會使用電報式語言——語法結構簡單，漏掉主語以及「the」、「is」和「are」這樣的詞。

The members of that group turned out to be the people who developed Alzheimer’s disease. The A.I. program predicted, with 75 percent accuracy, who would get Alzheimer’s disease, according to results published recently in The Lancet journal EClinicalMedicine. “We had no prior assumption that word usage would show anything,” said Ajay Royyuru, vice president of health care and life sciences research at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., where the A.I. analysis was done.

［時事英文］「超前部署 」英文怎麼說？
　
由於最近這個詞出現的頻率很高，所以陸續有同學寫信問我「超前部署」的英文是不是「advanced deployment 」？

１、「advanced」意味著在「程度／層次」（level）上是更高等的、更高級的，例如：

➣ advanced physics

３、若你想表達某事發生在其他事之前，則須用——「in advance (of something)」。例如：
　
➣ I should warn you in advance that I’m not a very good dancer.

　在此先感謝您的幫助。
　
➣ The Assembly passed legislation which required organizers of demonstrations to apply three days in advance for government approval.

４、在中文的語境裡，「超前部署」本為國軍術語，用於軍事上的部署與配置。因今年疫情而輾轉進入公眾視野，也成為公共衛生的防疫語彙。在英文裡，若想表達兵力上的預置，你可以說：
　
➣ the early deployment of troops
　
➣ deploy troops in advance (of something)
　
➣ deploy troops in preparation (of something)
　
➣ deploy troops ahead of something

５、在英文裡，「advanced deployment」雖是慣用語，但多用於計算（computing）以及網路管理（network administration），其中涉及較高階的（higher-level）電腦或系統的安裝過程，以利於真實環境裡的高效作業。

６、可能有些文章會使用「advance deployment」來作為「超前部署」的英文用法，以表達對流行疫情所採取的準備措施。但在英文裡，這並不是常見的用法：

７、「超前部署」雖可置於防疫的語境中，但在英文裡並沒有一個全然相應的用法。而在中文與英文的脈絡下，其所關聯的語意也不盡相同。英語使用者通常會這麼說：
