莎士比亞的相關語確實難以譯成中文，但由於發音演變之故，四百年後，這位曠世文豪的不少相關語連英國人也一頭霧水。英國語言學家 David Crystal 著有 The Oxford Dictionary of Original Shakespearean Pronunciation 一書，他花了十二年梳理莎士比亞的劇作，還原伊麗莎白時代的發音。原來《哈姆雷特》的名句：‘Frailty, thy name is woman.’，woman 本讀作 woe-man；《仲夏夜之夢》中 Demetrius 說：‘No die, but an ace, for him; for he is but one.’ ace 讀作 ass，即驢也。現代讀者也終於明白為何《皆大歡喜》的一句臺詞教伊麗莎白時代的觀眾絕倒噴飯：‘And so from hour to hour we ripe and ripe, and then from hour to hour we rot and rot, and thereby hangs a tale.’ 原來 hour 本讀作 whore，ripe 則讀作 rape。讀者不妨照原本發音讀一次，看看能忍笑否。 書名：《英語·人生 曾鈺成》 作者：錢景亮 出版：牛津大學出版社 #英文 #英語 #莎士比亞 #shakespeare #originalpronunciation #englishlearning #finnieslanguagearts
