It's time to address the elephant in the room...you cannot buy your way to a sustainable future.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And extrapolating on that thought...green growth is a lie.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Green growth theory (the one that our current SDGs are based on) asserts that continued economic expansion is compatible with our planet's ecological wellbeing.⁣⁣ • It's based on the idea that technological development/substitution will allow us to completely decouple GDP growth from resource use and carbon emissions.⁣⁣ • There is no evidence to show that this can be done on a global scale and it is highly unlikely that we can achieve this at a rate rapid enough to prevent global warming over 1.5°C or 2°C, making it a functionally useless theory.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Instead of looking for alternative methods to support the current capitalistic model of growth, we have to shift our attention and center the conversation around DEGROWTH.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Degrowth proposes a planned reduction of excess consumption & energy use in high-income nations in order to bring our global economy back into balance with the environment.⁣⁣ • It suggests that rather than using the GDP as an indicator of prosperity, we should look at other markers of social and environmental wellbeing instead.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ With the heatwave rolling through the PNW, it's clear that climate change is something that we're going to encounter more of on an everyday basis.⁣ ⁣ Rather than hoping to solve the climate crisis through a capitalistic lens, we have to think outside the box and question the very model we're operating in.⁣ ⁣ Degrowth isn't *conventionally* sexy. ⁣⁣ There's not much money to be made in it.⁣⁣ Maybe that's why we're not hearing about it.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But I personally think that it's a solution and conversation worth exploring. ⁣ ⁣⁣ What do you think?
