a number of, the number of

這一對短語並非同義語,使用場合也不相同。

A number of 的涵義相當於Some 或several,義”一些”,其後接複數名詞或代詞,例如a number of students(或them),與之搭配的動詞一般用複數形式。

The number of 是指數量或數字而言,其後也接複數名詞,但動詞用單數形式。試看下面的例句:

A number of Vietnamese boat people staged a protest against repatriation. 不少越南船民抗議遣返原地。
A large number of books and magazines are lent at our library every day. 我們的圖書館每天借出很多的圖書和雜誌。
A number of foreign guests are coming to Ocean Park today. 今日有不少外賓要來海洋公園。
(註:a large number of 的對語是a small number of,它們的用法和a number of 相同。)
The number of people coming to the country park is large tosay.
今日來郊野公園的人很多。
The number of people who own luxury cars is increasing every year. 擁有豪華汽車的人數與年俱增。
The number of students in our college is never under 2000. 我們學院的學生人數從不少於兩千。

值得注意的是,在英美人寫的文章中,有時我們會看到,a number of 之後接單數形式的動詞,在 the number of 之後卻接複數形式的動詞。例:
A large number of new words has entered the English language since 1940.
The number of names together are about two hundred and sixty.
有些語法學家和主張保持英語“純潔”的人(即所謂 purists 或 prescriptivists)認為,這些用法是不正當的,不能視作標準英語。

✉️前兩天前署長寫給美國現任衛生部長的公開信突然爆紅，主因是一位在美國教書的人看不下去，出來改了一片滿江紅，我們今天特地整理了幾個在寫作上值得注意、也是許多人會犯的錯來告訴大家：

No.1 #Nouns

📌在英文當中，名詞凡出現必有標記（專有名詞除外），標記指的是數量、指定或是所有格等等。

- I served as Minister of Health here in Taiwan.
＊經網友提出並確認 Minister of Health #可視為專有名詞，#故前方不用加the；但假若是 "minister of health"，也就是以小寫呈現的話，那前方的定冠詞the就是必須得加囉！

通常當名詞前面加上 ”the” 的時候，就代表說話的人與聽的人，都明確知道句中名詞是指什麼東西，反之只有說話者自己知道，但聽的人不知道就會用 a/an 或是複數 s 。

➡️ 更正：I served as Minister of Heath here in Taiwan.

No.2 #Agreement

📌接著談一致性，特別是前後時態以及單複數，如以下句子：

- Your country have many best schools of medicine.
這句主詞為第三人稱單數，所以動詞應該要單數has，且在此仍嫌太口語。建議用 There are 或 home to 句型。

➡️ 建議：The US is home to many great schools of medicine.

- Only one week ago your President Trump still keeps saying mask is useless
此句開頭點明時間為一週前，所以應該用 kept，以及說口罩無用，是泛指口罩這東西而不是只有一兩個，應該用複數

➡️ 更正：Only one week ago, President Trump still kept saying masks are useless.

No.3 #Subjunctive mood

📌最後談一下假設語氣，此處的假設語氣是與現在事實相反，請看句子：

- If I were you, l will resign as Secretary as HHS.
何謂與現在事實相反？簡單說是跟說話當下所預期的結果不同，這種狀況下就會使用過去式，因此在原句的 will 就應該改成過去式 would ，如下：

If I were you, I would resign as Secretary of HHS.
如果我是你，我就會辭職

💪最後補充，如果用到 will 的話，通常是表達未來一定會發生的事喔！一字之差就可以差之千里，不論中英文用字都一定要慎選！

🇺🇸美國開始解除封城，但，真的準備好了嗎？👀

許多國家的肺炎疫情已逐漸趨緩，因此美國日前陸續宣布解禁，但是這樣子解禁是否言之過早？
進入文章之前，先看看單字～

1. toll「傷亡；損失」：death toll「死亡人數」，而economic toll就是「經濟損失」。
2. staggering「令人咋舌的，驚人的」
3. criterion「標準，準則」：複數型比較特別，是criteria。
4. downward「朝下地」：字尾 -ward有「朝向～、往～」的意思。
5. trajectory「軌跡」：指將物體拋出去之後的軌跡。
6. legally binding「有法律約束力的」：bind當動詞，指「綑綁」，所以binding的意思延伸為「有約束力的」。
7. peak「達到高峰」：peak在這裡當動詞，也可當名詞，指「最高點，高峰」。
8. plateaue「穩定，停滯」：一樣在這裡當動詞。
9. (Only) time will tell.「唯有時間能證明。」：指某件事情的真相只能等真正發生之後才能知道。

In the United States, the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a huge death toll. Over 76,000 deaths have been recorded as of May 8, and the total is expected to reach 100,000 by the end of the month. But the virus has taken a huge economic toll as well. The unemployment rate has risen to a staggering 14.7 percent, the highest since the Great Depression of the 1930s. And then there’s the emotional toll. After months of social distancing, people are lonely, depressed and desperate to see their friends and loved ones.

Worried that mass unemployment may eventually cause more loss of life than the coronavirus, the federal government has made the decision to begin reopen the economy and let people return to work. The White House hopes that states will only reopen their economies if they meet the following criteria: (A) a “downward trajectory” in new coronavirus cases over a 14-day period; (B) an upward trend in testing and contact tracing. These criteria aren’t legally binding, however, and in many of the states that are opening up, case numbers are still rising.

In Missouri, for example, where the number of new positive cases is still growing, businesses will be allowed to open again this week, and people will be allowed to attend concerts—as long as people stay at least six feet apart. But is this a wise decision? Although the outbreak has either peaked or plateaued in most of the country, the vast majority of the population hasn’t been infected yet, and has no immunity. Some experts worry that opening up too quickly could lead to a second wave of infections in the fall. The decision of when to open up is a difficult one to make for each state, and only time will tell if their decision was correct.
