今日的黃竹坑，主要幹道兩旁，雖然還是一排枯燥乏味的舊式工廠大廈，但這一區的工業色彩，日漸消減。過去十年，黃竹坑多了簇新的商廈酒店之外，十幾間畫廊先後設立，不少藝術家在此租用工作室創作，而藝術愛好者也習慣到這裏觀賞展覽，亦即，一個文化藝術社區正在狹縫中悄悄形成。這些黃竹坑的轉變，讓政府在二○二○年施政報告的「躍動港島南」計劃中，也表示將會美化黃竹坑公共空間和市容，並會以活化工廈政策，加快工廈重建改修，為新興行業及文化藝術提供營運地方。未來數年，政府大計連同相繼落成的私人發展商樓盤，勢必把黃竹坑改頭換面。
「生態的發展、社區的發展，尤其與文化藝術有關的，必須要organic，慢慢自然形成。外力的配合、政府的資源，那些是extra、complementary的。」二○一○年，在黃竹坑開設區內首間畫廊「刺點畫廊」的秦美娜（Mimi），見證黃竹坑十年來，由純工業區轉型成商業區，藝術空間也愈來愈多，營造一股獨特的文化氣息。
她觀察，黃竹坑畫廊共通之處可能在於，會做一些實驗性較高的展覽，或展出較為年輕的藝術家，在夏日淡季也會有駐場藝術家計劃，讓觀眾直接看到藝術家的創作過程。「這些也不是在中環做到的事情，亦不是純商業推動的。」今日黃竹坑的藝術氣氛，由當區畫廊合力營造，無論政府有否介入，它都會有機形成。
另一間早期黃竹坑畫廊Art Statements的創辦人Dominique Perregaux，也是「南港島藝術區」的發起人。他憶述，他們第一批畫廊，趕在二○一三年第一屆香港Art Basel前，創立「南港島藝術區」，將區內畫廊及藝術家工作室組織起來，吸引海外收藏家到黃竹坑。
「機緣巧合下，這成功了，很有意思。接着我們便做了小冊子、藝術指南、定期通訊。我們也會在Art Basel舉行的三月及九月，辦那些大型藝術日，近五千人參與。免費、每間畫廊都提供食物，更有街頭表演，人們十分喜歡。」Dominique聲言，「對於認識藝術的人而言，我們開始使黃竹坑名聲遠播。」
