English Learning Ecosystem Update

As I began exploring Instagram, I struggled to find a way to deliver useful academic content. Instagram posts typically focus on images, short clips, and concise text, which are attention grabbing but not always entirely conducive to language learning. I looked over the posts of established Instagram English learning accounts, and experimented with vocabulary posts and even news posts for a couple of weeks. Not wanting to post just images, I thought about creating something new even with the rigid format of the platform.

當我開始研究怎麼用IG，我想盡了各種辦法，希望能提供大家一些實用的學術內容。 IG 的特色著重在圖片、短片以及簡潔的文字，這樣的方式雖然很容易引人注目，卻不全然有助於語言學習。我瀏覽了 IG 上英文教學網紅的貼文，並在這幾週嘗試發了一些學術單字與新聞相關的文章。我並不想只是發一些圖片，而思考著要如何在既有框架下創作一些新的東西。

A tenet of using tech in education is to engage students with what they are familiar with, not give them an entirely new platform that is difficult to use. So, how could I create a new series of Instagram posts that is both educational and unique? I thought about my goal to disseminate academic English resources, and how I could leverage my experience as a curriculum writer and voice recording artist for public school textbooks.

一個使用科技進行教育的原則是用學生熟悉的方式與他們互動，而非用了全新的平台卻使他們難以學習。那麼，我應該如何創作獨特且具教育意義的一系列全新 IG 發文呢？我想到了我傳遞學術英文資源的目標，以及思考到該如何發揮身為教科書編輯者與音頻錄製者的經驗。

So far, this is what I have at the moment. I will post Word of the Day (每日一詞), high frequency vocabulary words that you see in academic texts and sometimes on the news. These Tier 2 academic vocabulary words are not exclusive to a single domain and complement the theme-based approach I’ve taken with my mind-mapping vocabulary class. In these posts, I added the pronunciation, collocation, and example sentences of each word for students. These words will be helpful to university-level students who often read academic texts and the news. Students can access them by simply clicking on the hashtag 學術英語單字.

To help students use more precise and common academic phrases, I then added Academic Phrases (每日一句), set phrases that appear in both academic speech and writing. These phrases have varying functions from introducing a topic to comparing and contrasting ideas. There is a difference between speech and writing, so I picked words that could be used for both. If one is used only in a specific context, I will make note of it in the video recording. This series of posts will help students with language output, and can be found under the following hashtag 學術英語片語.

Last, I will follow up with an abridged version of breaking news (時事英文) with high frequency collocations and audio recordings. This will provide students with the input of not only individual words, but how to use them in output (speech and writing) with context. While all these news posts might seem independent at first, I will eventually link and organize them by theme when there are enough posts. Along with my news class, these extra posts will help students stay aware of current events, acquire set phrases used in journalism, and develop critical thinking. These posts can currently be found under the hashtag EEL時事英文.

🇺🇸美國生活諺語：dish篇🍽

1⃣ a dish (though it's a bit old-fashioned)

When we say “wash the dishes,” we mean all the tableware, and even the silverware. But in English, whereas plates are usually used to eat from, dishes, which are flatter than bowls, and not as flat as plates (and sometimes have lids), are used to serve or cook food. And a dish can also refer to the food that is served in the dish. Now let’s learn some other dish-related idioms!
我們知道 wash the dishes「洗碗」是泛指洗所有的餐具，即使是銀製餐具也算在內。但是在英國，plate跟dish則是兩種不同的東西，plate 是進餐時用的淺盤，而 dish 則是比碗淺但比 plate 深的深盤（有時還附蓋子），通常是裝盛菜餚出餐或烹煮食物用。dish 也可以指該道菜。說完了，接下來就來介紹跟 dish 一字有關的諺語吧。

You know that a serving of food can be called a dish, but what if you 1⃣call a person a dish? It means they’re sexy and attractive. This expression, which sounds a little old-fashioned these days, likely has it’s origins in comparing a person to a delicious dish of food. Ex: Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!
你知道一道菜可以用 a dish 稱之，但你叫一個人a dish又是怎麼回事？其實是說那個人性感吸引力十足，「是你的菜」。儘管這個表達放在現在已經有點過時，就跟拿一道菜來比喻一個人一樣過氣。如：Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!（哇，那個妹有夠正的──是天菜。）

Besides food, what else can be served on dishes? Revenge! Have you ever heard the proverb, 2⃣“Revenge is a dish best served cold”? It means that revenge is most satisfying when one takes the time to plan it carefully and carry it out when your enemy least suspects it, rather than immediately after one is wronged. This expression has existed for hundreds of years, but it was made popular when it appeared in the 1982 movie, Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Ex: A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold.
除了食物，還有什麼可以裝在盤子上？仇恨！你有聽過俗語「君子報仇三年不晚」（Revenge is a dish best served cold）嗎？指與其立即復仇，花時間慢慢計畫再實行，讓敵人放下戒心之後再復仇，這樣會更令人滿足。1982年電影《星艦迷航記2: 星戰大怒吼》讓這個存在已經好幾百年的老俗語再次流行起來。如：A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? 你怎麼能忍受他這樣對待你？ B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold. 我不會繼續忍下去的，但是君子報仇三年不晚。

As a verb, dish means “to serve,” and is the basis of a number of expressions. To 3⃣“dish it out” means to criticize or insult, and is often used in the idiom, “sb. can dish it out, but not take it,” which is used to describe people who are quick to criticize others, but can’t take criticism themselves. Ex: A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.
dish當動詞指「上菜」，也延伸出好幾種諺語用法。dish it out指「批評，侮辱」，常出現在sb. can dish it out, but not take it.這個諺語中，指「愛批評他人卻批評不得的人」。如：A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. 我不明白為什麼凱倫會這麼膚淺。B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.是啊，她愛批評別人，但見不得別人批評她。

Another idiom with dish as a verb is 4⃣“dish the dirt (on),” which means to gossip about someone or something. Ex: Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt. The expression “dish on” also has the same meaning. Ex: Why are you always dishing on Patricia?
另一個dish當動詞的諺語是dish the dirt on，指「八卦某事或某人」。如Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt.（咱們坐下來喝杯茶聊八卦吧。）也可以用dish on表示：Why are you always dishing on Patricia?（為什麼你總是在八卦派翠西亞？）

病毒疣是皮膚科門診很常遇到的問題，最常用的方法就是液態氮冷凍治療。幫大人噴液態氮還好，我最怕遇到小朋友，孩子『啊～～～好痛！！！』我『可是我又還沒噴！！！』

除了液態氮治療外，還可以局部塗抹水楊酸、樂得美、外用Ａ酸、雷射、手術等等，除此之外，文獻還有超多種其他治療方法，像是加溫療法、光動力療法、針灸、甚至在病灶處局部施打卡介苗、MMR疫苗或是HPV疫苗來激發免疫力等等。

氧化鋅在大家的印象中都是用來收斂傷口，不然就是小孩子的屁屁膏成分，沒想到對病毒疣也有效？！2007年，科學家用20%的氧化鋅軟膏跟水楊酸藥膏做比較，發現氧化鋅軟膏用三個星期可以讓病毒疣達到50%的清除率，只可惜實驗組跟對照組並沒有統計學上的差異。

2019年又有新的實驗，用15%的氧化鋅軟膏治療手上病毒疣，每天擦三次，共擦四個星期，結果病灶的表面積有顯著減少！雖然換算成面積改變程度則和對照組相比沒統計學上的意義，但樂得美藥膏需要12~16週的療程，氧化鋅軟膏便宜許多，又可以在第四週就看到成效，或許可以當作病毒疣治療的輔助工具。

有人會說『病毒疣本來就可能因自體免疫力的緣故而消失啊！怎麼知道是氧化鋅的功效？』通常激發自體免疫力殺病毒疣至少要兩個月以上甚至幾年的時間，沒辦法這麼快就有效果。

又有人問『手掌角質這麼厚，氧化鋅的穿透效果又不好！』沒錯，所以文獻還有搭配削皮讓病灶薄一點再塗藥膏喔！
