Many of you may be familiar with South Africa wines from Swartland, Stellenbosch or Paarl, but Semillon from Franschhoek Valley? First time for me. 🤓
Franschhoek Valley (‘French corner’ in Dutch), encompassed by Paarl in the north, Stellenbosch in the west and Overberg in the east-south corner, is 75 km away from Cape Town. Due to the mountain ranges enclosed in the north and south, Franschhoek Valley has warm, continental climate and it’s ideal for viticulture.
What I have in my glass is Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2016. Grape are sourced from 3 different old vineyards with vines more than 70-year-old in Franschhoek Valley. The wine is sharp, clean, and precise. Displaying aromas of lemon, gooseberry, yellow apple skins, green figs, thyme, chamomile and beeswax on the nose. Chalk, yeast, guava, papaya with bright acidity on the palate. Neat, pure and focused.

從考古證據來看，白色是人類最早使用的顏色之一，在距今約兩萬年前創作的拉斯科洞窟壁畫群（The Cave Art Paintings of the Lascaux Cave）中，史前時代的人類使用方解石（calcite）與白堊石（chalk）作為白色顏料，用來當作圖畫背景或為輪廓打亮，搭配黑色的木炭及紅、黃色赭石（ochre），創作出生動的圖畫。而在古埃及，白色是代表豐饒女神伊西斯（Isis）的顏色，伊西斯的祭司會穿著白色進行儀式。

在古希臘人的世界觀中，世界由黑暗與光明構成，因此白色是一種基礎色，古羅馬學者老普林尼（Pliny the Elder）在其編撰的《博物誌》（Naturalis Historia）中記載，西元前四世紀的希臘藝術大師阿佩萊斯（Apelles）以及其他同時代的藝術家，一般只會在繪畫中使用白、紅、黃與黑四種顏色，當時的白色顏料是極具毒性的白鉛。
白色也是羅馬傳統男性正式服飾托加長袍（toga）的顏色，14至18歲的古羅馬男性公民在參加正式儀式時，會穿上全白的托加，執政官及祭司所穿的是紫邊白色鑲邊托加（toga praetexta），而到了奧古斯都（Augustus）稱帝的時代，所有男性公民都被規定必須穿上托加，才能出入羅馬廣場（Roman Forum），想要爭取公職的男性公民，則會穿上用白堊石粉末打亮的托加，這種托加名為toga candida，candere在拉丁語中的意思是發亮，這個詞也是後來英語候選人candidate、蠟燭candle，以及坦誠candid的字根；對古羅馬人來說，白色代表的是純潔、忠誠、貞潔、德行，這個概念後來也被西方文明所繼承。

有錢之後，除了美食、美酒外，當然要任性一下囉~~
所以百老匯的專業舞者 Rodney Strong 退休後在1959年的時後到了 Sonoma County 開啟了『Rodney Strong Vineyards』的歷史，不過任性歸任性，錢自然要錢滾錢才行，不然葡萄酒業燒錢可是很快的，所以他除了從當地傳承四代的葡萄農『Klein』家族購買葡萄園，而後來則延攬了現在的首席釀酒師『Rick Sayre』，這些都是目前『Rodney Strong Vineyards』成功的因素之一。
我個人則認為『Rodney Strong Vineyards』的成功三大因素便在：
1.產區：100%的 Sonoma County 他們在Alexander Valley、CHalk Hill 與 Russian River Valley三大產區中擁有的14塊葡萄園，因為不同的微型氣候使他們的品種能夠保有多元化與差異性。
2.首席釀酒師『Rick Sayre』的釀酒團隊與葡萄園管理。
3.新式釀酒設備的投入、恆溫酒窖擴建、新桶木桶的購入與有自有的橡木桶維修廠~~等等。
我個人還滿喜歡他們家的 Cabernet Sauvignon 尤其是『Reserve Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2014』濃郁、單寧艱澀、煙薰類、梅子干等新鮮水果的風味，還有尾韻帶有的牛奶糖桶系風味，這些都讓人感到極為年輕+尚未開始發展的陳年風味，讓人對他陳年後的風味有極大的期待性，當然我指的是5年後或15年後的味道。（A）
不過來自『Estate Vineyards Series Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015』也有滿好玩的風味，例如較多的溼礫石、藍莓、薄菏與礦石鹹感的風味，雖然CS本身的特性也是存在的，但多出的一些較不一樣的風味顯的滿有意思的。
