The 33-year-old part-time model made international news last July after she became the first woman in the country to be sentenced six strokes of the rotan for consuming alcohol.
Speaking to Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview, Kartika said the entire ordeal had destroyed her marriage, strained her family and two children.

從本質上來說，懲罰亦屬於暴力的一種，但往往一個社會將其用於訂下道德的邊界，為整個社會立下什麼可以做、什麼不可以做的紅線。然而，不同社會之中這道紅線有不一樣的位置，誰來執行懲罰也有不同的社會安排。
這篇來自於【CUP】上的文章，帶我們看到印尼社會如何施行「鞭刑」，以及他們找來的「女性處刑者」，並也讓我們看到人類學者對這樣現象的解釋。

印尼亞齊省，因過去獲中央特別授權行使伊斯蘭教法，一直以來都是這個世俗主義國家中特別的存在。伊斯蘭教法規管包括諸如賭博、通姦、飲酒、同性戀及婚前性行為等教義所不容許的「道德」罪行。而在亞齊省，這些罪行最常見的懲罰便是公開鞭打。儘管不少人士呼籲結束鞭刑（caning），但省當局拒絕之餘，更鑑於女性犯罪者人數增加，加招女性處刑者。
印尼女權運動家 Misiyah 表示，找女性來向同性處刑，只會使原本已壓迫女性的伊斯蘭教法制度，進一步破壞婦女團結。「在這以女性針對其他女性施暴的情況下，所有婦女都必須團結一致，增強彼此的力量。」營辦印尼女權雜誌的 Atnike Sigiro 亦反對這種做法：「鞭刑不會因為女性向女性執行，就變得有道德。」但她憂慮，在處理法律制度問題時，婦女往往是弱勢一群。「擁有自治權的亞齊省，在尊重人權、保護婦女免受暴力傷害方面，一直歷經挫折。」
沙特阿拉伯法赫德國王大學教授、文化人類學（Cultural anthropology）學者 Sumanto al Qurtuby 則從另一方面闡述伊斯蘭教法問題。他稱，教法實際上是當權者對社會男女弱勢群體，施加權力的政治手段。「伊斯蘭教法通常只用於平民及輕微罪行身上，但不會涉及政治寡頭與精英分子。在印尼，伊斯蘭教法是政治精英們用來取悅伊斯蘭團體的政治商品。這些法例更獲非伊斯蘭政黨同意，因為他們也要爭取選民支持。」
