The cold is finally over, today is the first day in the year I went out without a coat. It’s 25 degrees C and I basked in vitamin D and new possibilities, waiting for the unexpected. Singapore students in Paris! I love them right away because we share the same journey: young, worked for several years, manoeuvre through mid-career change by upgrading whether in Singapore or abroad. I basked in their energy and excitement, reminded me of my university days in Tokyo as an “overage/old” student in my 30s, struggling with cultural and language barriers. The choice to give ourselves a second, or for me a third chance in life, is a constant challenge. We fail and fall and bear the consequences of the decisions we make. We face snide remarks that we could do this because we have no responsibilities, no financial issues, no family who depend on us, no sacrifice. Nothing could be further from the truth.
