[Beihai Park, Beijing] Since the Jin Dynasty, there have been different versions of the “Eight Sceneries of Beijing” (燕京八景), and one of them is known as the “Spring Shade of Qiong Island” (Qiongdao Chunyin, 琼岛春荫) located in the Beihai Park.
This stele, which was erected in 1751, is inscribed with this phrase, which is also a calligraphy written by the Emperor Qianlong from the Qing dynasty. According to records, the construction of the stele burst its initial budget by about 600 taels of silver, well one tael of silver was equivalent to more than 1200 – 3000 wens of money (文钱), and the commoners were unable to earn silver at all because a catty of pork was only 20 wen, yet they barely had enough to make ends meet, let alone to have meat for meals.
The stele is placed on a white stone terrace on the northern side of Jade Flower Island (琼华岛, Qionghuadao), which is at the centre of Beihai, it is guarded by white marble balusters with four dragons 🏵🐉 chasing a pearl on top of the stone pillar. However, you might require a bit of time to locate the stele as it might be covered partially among the bushes during summer! 😄📍Beijing, China. 中国北京。🇨🇳
