Hainanese cuisine restaurants are everywhere, they are very accessible and convenient. However to have the delicacies authentically while having a sea view, this would be the first.
Hainan Shaoye located in Harbour City is such a great place for mood and food. Their Seafood Laksa Lemak was packed with coconutty flavor and rich milky taste. The Hainan Chicken Rice Set was definitely one of their best sellers! The silky smooth chicken was cooked sou vide with fragrants and stock. It was as juicy and succulent as it can be.
The Cereal Prawns was something I have never tried before and man did I love it. The prawns stir fried with salted egg yolk and oatmeal for texture and seasoned with sugar to balance the saltiness. It was unbelievably addictive, what a great idea. The complementary seam bun with condensed milk was also a nice treat. Perfect for dipping it into the oatmeal crumble too!
The Malaysian Bak Kut Teh had a bold herbal note, I have to say it was not for everyone, I can feel my nose was on the verge of bleeding after a couple sip. Rendang Beef Ribs was such a historical dish. The recipe they used were meant to serve royalties at the ancient times. The beef ribs was stewed low and slow with many herbs and spices, the falling of the bone texture and the lingering aftertaste were really memorable.
For honorable mention, the Turnip Cake with Sambal Sweet Soy Sauce was an ideal snack with a cold one, the sweet and saltiness of the sweet say was lifted up by Sambal which is basically the greatest chilli sauce ever. The Nanyang Twins (Kek Lapis-Layered Cake and Pandan Souffle Cake) would be a nice dessert to wrap it up. I have to say the Pandan cake was one of the tastiest I have ever tasted. The texture was really light and fluffy with a bright scent of pandan which I adore.
Hainanese was one of my favourite cuisines and this has once confirmed again, would be a nice place to bring your pops there for a cozy father's day dinner!
