I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

澳洲18世紀末期始成為大英帝國殖民地及囚犯流放的地點，領土主權屬於大英帝國。

1901.1.1 大英帝國把澳洲六塊英屬殖民地改制為州，組成澳洲聯邦，成為大英帝國的自治領（享有高度自治權限的殖民地，領土主權仍屬於主權母國）。

第一次世界大戰以後，英國政府對自治領內部事務的參與逐漸減少，在帝國內逐漸衍生了新的慣例，即君主對於各殖民地內部事務依照殖民地政府的建議行事，而不是英國政府。

1926年，英國政府發表《1926年貝爾福宣言書（英語：Balfour Declaration of 1926）》，宣布各自治領應成為政治和外交上完全獨立，以英國君主為國家元首的國家。也即是各自治領的總督不再是英國政府殖民地部的代表，而是英國君主指派的全權代表。

而澳洲各州的總督（州督），是女王不在該國直接行使元首職權時在當地的君主全權代表。這些官員可以執行的權利，不但與君主立憲制度之下的君主相若，而且還可以代表女王，按照該國憲法行使一些王家特權。

1931年的《西敏法令》中，澳洲是最初的自治領之一，雖然法令直到1942年澳洲才通過《1942年西敏法令採納法令》，《西敏法令》在澳洲從1939年起追溯生效，澳洲在此時獲得獨立的立法權，不過依然奉英國君主為國家元首，與英國組成共主邦聯。

1931.12.11澳洲成為「大英國協王國」成員國在「大英國協」國際組織中組成共主聯邦，歸類為君主立憲制國家，領土主權仍舊屬於英國，依其聯邦法律，其國家元首是澳大利亞君主，與英國君主為同一人。1940年澳洲成立駐美代表處。

1986年通過法令《1986年澳洲法案（英語：Australia Act 1986）》排除了英國在澳洲立法生效的可能性，排除了英國干涉澳洲政府的可能性，排除了澳洲法院向英國法院上訴的可能性。 澳洲女王伊麗莎白二世前往澳洲簽署《與澳洲關係法》，使澳洲完全脫離英國正式成為主權獨立的國家，完成法理獨立建國。唯君主立憲制未曾變動，至今仍尊英國君主兼任為澳大利亞國家元首，僅具有象徵性意義。

大英國協跟大英帝國是不一樣的喔！

👉🏻大英帝國（單一國家）：英國本國（聯邦制）＋英國殖民地（包含一般殖民地、具高度自治的自治領）。

享有高度自治權限的殖民地才會是自治領(dominion) ，其領土主權屬於英國，不具有國家法人格。（擁有國家法人格就是主權獨立國家；而領土主權屬於某個國家的地方不會具有國家法人格。）

早在1884年，羅斯伯里爵士在訪問澳洲時曾談論過改變大英帝國，因為它的一些殖民地變得更加獨立，如「大英國協王國」。英國和殖民地總理的初次會議於1887年召開，而這也導致1911年帝國會議的建立。

大英國協從帝國會議發展而來。揚·史末資在1917年提出了一個具體的建議，當時他創造了「大英國協」一詞，並設想了1919年巴黎和會上的「未來憲政關係和精神調整」。「不列顛聯邦」一詞在1921年「英愛條約」中首次獲得英國於法律上的承認，當時，愛爾蘭自由邦議員在宣誓成為國會議員時，就是用「大英國協」一詞來替代「大英帝國」。

第二次世界大戰結束後，大英帝國逐漸瓦解，大部分組成部分去殖民化，各自治領漸漸接管所有的外交權力，1940年澳洲成立駐美代表處，1943年加拿大把駐美代表處升級為大使館。

大英帝國瓦解後，英國的本國構成單位：英格蘭、蘇格蘭、威爾斯跟北愛爾蘭這四個地方，英國本身是以 country 來稱呼這四個地方，中文的話可以稱為「構成國」。雖然稱作Country，但這四個地方在國際法上不是主權國家，因為他們的領土主權屬於英國，英國是主權國家，具有一個國家法人格的身份。

👉🏻現今英國是四個構成國+屬地（就像離島這樣）。

「大英國協」是一個由54個主權國家所組成的國際組織，成員大多為前英國殖民地及其屬土。大英國協英文原文稱為Commonwealth of Nations，中文直譯為「國家共同體」，並無「英屬」有關字樣，但在中文中被翻譯為大英國協。雖然建立之初有「英屬」有關字樣，在1949年4月的《倫敦宣言（英語：London Declaration）》後，「英屬」一詞就從大英國協的頭銜中刪除了，以反映其非殖民化的性質，但中文中仍保留。

大英國協中含有16個大英國協王國，其中14個曾經是英國的殖民地。

「（大英）國協王國」指的是以英國國家元首為共主的君主立憲國家，「王國」表示這些國家採君主制。英屬殖民地剛變成大英國協王國時，其領土主權仍屬英國。後來這些地方各自脫離英國完成獨立，現在都已經是主權獨立的國家。

2015.3.26 英國副首相尼克·克萊格宣布，所有大英國協王國都依據各自法律完成對王室權利法律的修正；同日，新的法律在所有大英國協王國境內生效。
