The 'original Trail Blazer'

By now, legend has it that after Geoff Petrie scored a then-Trail Blazers
record 51 points against the Houston Rockets in January 1973, the man who
often defended Petrie, Mike Newlin, practically scoffed at the feat.

"That's the most interesting thing about the story," Petrie says today. "It
was after the game in Houston, and (Newlin) said something in the paper

Indeed, nearly three months later, Petrie rolled up another 51 points against
Newlin and the Rockets, re-enforcing the greatest scoring feat in team
history.

Only one problem: Newlin said he never said those comments after Petrie's
first 51-point game.

week from his home in Sugar Land, Texas. "But let me tell you something:
Those performances were sheer phenomena, because I was all over him. I gave
him nothing. He earned every point.

6-foot-5 guard from Princeton who was not only the "original Trail Blazer"
after being the first draft pick of the franchise, but also the franchise's
first superstar.

His six-year career, during which he averaged 21.8 points, was among the most
prolific in team history and is why Petrie landed at No. 4 on The Oregonian's
list of the Top 40 Blazers.

Petrie held the team scoring record for 22 seasons, until Damon Stoudamire

Boston's Dave Cowens, made two All-Star appearances and holds the team record
for points in a game by a rookie (46). All-time, he ranks sixth in scoring
and fifth in assists.

Petrie's strength as a long-range shooter, makes his statistics even more
impressive.

"Geoff Petrie was a better player than Clyde Drexler," said Jim Barnett, a
teammate of Petrie for the 1970-1971 season who went on to captain the Golden

Top 50 players of all time. He had no weaknesses."

Newlin, a noted defender during his 11 NBA seasons, agreed.

"The only thing that kept Geoff Petrie from the Hall of Fame was injuries,"
Newlin said. "And anybody who played against him would say he is a Hall of
Famer. You just couldn't stop him."

What did stop Petrie, in the end, was a balky left knee.

In the summer after averaging 24.8 points as a rookie, Petrie said he was
working out at Portland State University shooting jumpers when he felt
something odd in his knee.

"There was this catching, an unstableness in my knee," Petrie said. "It
wasn't any acute event."

That summer, he had the first of what would over the years turn into several
surgeries on the knee. He missed the first 20 games of his second season.
Although he would have two more big scoring seasons — averaging 24.9 points
in his third season and 24.3 in his fourth season — Petrie never felt the
same.

By the start of his fifth season, in 1974, Petrie was becoming more of a jump
shooter and less of the cutting, darting player who could take anyone off the
dribble.

"I was taking a lot of anti-inflammatories and having the occasional
injections," Petrie said. "The cutting, the jumping, the planting, I couldn't

Of course, "struggling" by Petrie's terms meant averaging 18.9 points and
shooting 46.1 percent from the field. But clearly, he was being more limited
by the knee, and when a new coach named Jack Ramsay was hired before the
1976-1977 season, he wanted to know the status of Petrie, whose contract had
expired.

one year on his knee, and watched the Blazers franchise he helped popularize
win the championship the year after he left.

In fact, he was still living in Portland when the Blazers won the
championship and in the days after the parade, he and a group that included
Bill Walton went on a rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in
Idaho.

Still, it was a tough time for Petrie.

I'll put it that way," Petrie said. "Not so much because of the championship,
but because where my career was. It was a hard thing for me to deal with. But
as you get older, you understand there are circumstances in life that you
have no control over. They just show up at your door unannounced."

Petrie never played again, though he later returned to basketball, first as a
broadcaster and coach and later as a team executive.

When he was healthy, Newlin insists that Petrie's offensive repertoire was
unstoppable, particularly his fallaway jumper.

In the first 51-point game, Petrie hit 19-of-35 shots, 13-of-14 free throws
and had seven assists in 42 minutes. The second game he made 19-of-28 from

"It was an insult to me to have a guy score on me," Newlin said. "There was

"You know what?" Petrie said. "The best thing I remember about those games is
that we won them both."
