This is not a feel-good book. This book is a brutally honest and highly empathetic illustration of the wounds and weaknesses of healers.
To the general public, it can sometimes seem like medical school acceptance is a guaranteed gateway to success, wealth, and even health. This is not the case. There are doctors out there struggling with physical and mental illnesses, doctors unable to cope with the stress of being part of the profession, and doctors who should have never entered medical school in the first place. Unfortunately, their needs are often ignored, leaving them to fend for themselves in a system that offers little to no psychological support. The end result is disastrous for all parties involved.
Physician wellbeing is an issue that deserves more discussion and recognition. This is one of the very first books to cover this topic in depth, from medical school admissions all the way to the attending physician level. Caroline Elton’s detailed account of the challenges that doctors face-ableism, racism, sexism, and wrong career choices, among others-is sobering and should be part of every medical student/physician’s bookshelf.
