Yahoo Japan interviewed me the other day and the resulting video was released yesterday. The headline included on the post read: In Danger of Bankruptcy, Takashi Murakami Feels Desperate. In the video interview I talked about the artist’s way of being. In particular, I discussed how evaluations of artists during their lifetimes aren't very meaningful and that their works’ true merits are assessed only after their deaths. But instead, of course, the one catchy comment I made has sensationally been circulated. I had to smile wryly, admitting the futility of explaining how art comes to be to the ordinary audience. It was back in February and March that I was faced with the despair-inducing danger of bankruptcy and things have since been looking up. But I did have to clear out the large studio I had maintained in NY for the past 20 years or so the other day, shipping quite a volume of items back to Japan. I’m now contemplating what to do there next. At my studio in Saitama, Japan, we are working non-stop against deadlines on completing the commission paintings I had accumulated for a few years. Dear clients awaiting the commissioned works, please be rest assured that we will be delivering them without fail. My tumultuous way of life will come to an end in the next dozen years or so. In the meantime, I hope you feel comforted by watching the tragicomedy that is my life. It would be my pleasure as an entertainer. translation: @tabi_the_fat ヤフージャパンのインタビュー番組で取材を受けて、昨日その動画がリリースされました。その番組のキャッチに書かれたタイトルが「倒産危機で自暴自棄。村上隆氏」でした。 インタビューの内容動画では、芸術家の在り方を語りました。特に存命中は芸術家の評価にそれ程意味がない。死後作家が居なくなってからが真価が問われる、と言う内容なのですが、そこよりもキャッチーな一言がバーン！と流布されました。 一般の人に芸術の生成の話をしても仕方が無いしね、と苦笑い。 倒産の絶望的な危機は今年の2月、3月頃で、今は状況改善してきていますが、20年ほど借りていた、NYの大きなスタジオは引き払い、大量の荷物を日本に送付し終わって、次どうしようかなぁ、と思案中です。 日本の埼玉県のスタジオでは、数年間溜め込んだコミッションのペインティングの締め切りに追われて青色吐息で製作中。なのでコミッションしてくださってる皆様、作品は必ず御納品いたしますのでご安心ください。 僕のドタバタした生き方も、あと10数年で終わります。今はその悲喜劇を見てもらって、癒されてください。そうしたら芸人としての至福の喜びでもあります故。
