Three things you need to know if you want to learn Copperplate calligraphy 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s taken me four years to figure out how to write copperplate calligraphy😅. YouTube and Pinterest weren't tat popular back then, so you can imagine the struggle⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The worst part is, I tried to convince myself to try modern calligraphy (which is more relaxed and therefore ‘ easier to learn’), but I just love the elegance of copperplate so much I had to learn it first😭⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It shouldn’t take years to write your first calligraphy letter, even if it’s copperplate. Here are three tips that took me years to understand 🤦🏾, and eventually helped me start writing my first copperplate letters properly within a month.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Don’t practice in alphabetical order. Practice in basic groups! You can find the grouping easily on Google. Or if you want a more authoritative grouping, then check out the IAMPETH manual;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. While the straight pen holder is the ‘right’ tool for writing copperplate, I’ll suggest you go for an oblique pen holder if you want to start writing your letters immediately 😌. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The oblique pen holder is easier to control, but in the long run, learning how to use a straight penholder will help your calligraphy dance. Your muscles will be so much more relaxed using a straight penholder⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Work out your paper, pen, and ink combination! Sometimes it’s not you, but the tools that you’re using. The easiest option is Canson marker paper and woodfree paper, and Sumi ink with a few drops of water.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tag someone who is always wanted to try calligraphy!✒️💓
