其實 Louis Sachar 的 Sideway Stories of Wayside School 都很值得放在「我愛的童書」系列中，比較之下，我選了 Holes。Holes 的風格獨特，故事以三條不同時空的故事線並排發展，情節引人入勝，處處都是意想不到的驚喜。看到最後的結局，你才明白所有人物、事件的關係，才對整個故事的脈絡豁然開朗。

School Library Journal 在 2012 年的 Top 100 Children's Novels 選舉中，Holes 排第 6，深得讀者喜愛。你知道第一位是哪一本經典好書嗎？也是我十分喜愛的童書，答案寫在留言中。

這段假期，我買了幾本我心中的 classic books，例如 Charlotte’s Web、Frindle、Hatchet、the Adventures of Tom Sawyer、the Adventure of Huckberry Finn ⋯ 當中還有一本我超級喜愛的、由得獎作家 Louis Sachar 創作的 Holes。

我鼓勵正仔嘗試多看不同風格的作品，其實他 K3 時，已經自己主動從我書櫃裡拿來 Louis Sachar 其他作品 - Wayside School 這系列幾本書閱讀，他早已認識這位作家。然而 Holes 的風格卻迥異，用了截然不同的敘事方式、故事主題，當然難度也是比較高，分開了三條不同時空的故事線，故事發展意想不到，處處驚喜。讀者最後結局才明白所有人物、事件的關係，才對整個故事的脈絡豁然開朗。

正仔看完了書，我還與他一起完成了一張複雜的人物關係圖，因為這是一個橫跨幾代人的故事。

我很想找來 Holes 的改編電影，由 Walt Disney 製作，中文譯名叫《別有洞天》。Apple TV 沒有、Google Movie 沒有、Netflix 沒有 ⋯ 香港現在沒有 HMV，也不知在哪裡找來影碟，Amazon US 的 Holes DVD 也缺貨。最後終於終於上網找到，收到的一刻我如獲至寶！電影也很精彩，並非常忠於原著，感覺原汁原味，原來 screenplay 找來了作者 Louis Sachar 來寫，這電影實在太值得收藏。

Wayside School一買回家，老大James就搶著拿去看。
老二Sean看James讀得哈哈大笑，也拿一本去看。
結果都過了九點半還不去睡覺，只好先幫他們把書收起來了。

總希望大家愛上閱讀，但愛上後，還是要注意時間。
什麼時間，做什麼事。

Wayside School有點像影集，每一章節有一個主題的小故事。還沒養成閱讀習慣的孩子，可以安排讓孩子試試一天讀一個章節。

書上有標記是寫給8-12歲母語人士讀的。
台灣的孩子大概小學高年級到國中左右可以讀。
當然你想讀，就可以讀，沒有設限的!
