Dark Blue The string of black stallions tow a dark blue carriage through the cold night. As they gallop through the wet earth the white moonlight reflects their shiny mane and sinewy muscles. The black mane is a shade so vacuous and consuming it appears as if the horses are shimmering. Visible and then an instant later, invisible. The tall trees in the distant skyline sway in the empty midnight. A man in the carriage sits motionless with his hands crossed counting every roaring gallop. He takes a deep breath and smells the iron tainted night breeze. When you swallow it tastes like creamy black beer with the tint of diamond and fried leeks. He opens his eyes and as he stares deep into yours all you can see is dark blue.

Day 13: Giving a make-up tutorial to young mothers at Rumah Kita. My first thought initially wasn’t to give a makeup lesson bc I didn’t want to seem vacuous in my approach to kindness, but as we went around the circle introducing ourselves, I saw how the girls were really looking forward to learning more about makeup and if I was to be there for them in the morning, then i would definitely want to be sure my time with them would give them a short respite from everything they are dealing with. The young mothers ranged from 16-37 and understood that they were shunned by society, most of their parents sent them here to deliver in silence and to avoid the shame they would receive from their community. Luckily we have Rumah Kita who have saved 235 babies already! Recently we have been posting incessantly about Alabama’s abortion bill about the rights of American women, but we should look into our own issues of baby dumping and abandonment. What policies do we have in place to prevent this from happening? How do we stop the systemic discrimination making unwed mothers pariah? Who are the policy makers that can protect these women? Why do we shame the mothers when creating a child takes BOTH men and women? Why do we not teach these girls about sex education or about child grooming when they are of age? That’s my rant for the day but here’s another thank you to @ngohub.asia for setting this up and allowing me to spend time with these women.
