We are "Orang Ulu", or people from upriver.
Only when I moved to West Malaysia did I know that "Orang Ulu" is a derogatory term used as a playful insult.
Our histories lay in these shallow and deep waters... stories of headhunting warfare, to watching logs float downstream, to river games, epics of our forefathers taking long journeys for trade, myths of spirit animals, picnics and camps and farms by the river. Our connections with others and with nature are given by the these rivers. Rivers are our cultural heritage too (all the folk songs I've learn have elements of rivers). We are Orang Ulu people and damn proud of it.

"Orang Ulu" isn't a race or an ethnicity, but an umbrella term used to river to people that live upriver, such as Kenyah, Kelabit, Penan, Sa'ban, Lun Bawang, Kenyah, Berawan. Even within the Kenyah ethnicity, there is Kenyah Lepo Ke, Kenyah Ngorek and many others 🍃.

Home 💚 The river that gave us food for hundreds of years, that gave us a path to travel near and far. Often we are identified by rivers "We are from ulu (upriver) Baram", "along Pa Kelapang" etc, and the kampungs that are upriver or downriver from us are like family, even though they're from a different tribe. Liling is the unofficial 'anthem' of the Orang Ulu (upriver people) of Sarawak. Liling means to turn around, and so during the chorus, people will dance in circles. People take turns to sing the verses, which are made up on the spot based on the occasion of the gathering.

I call this the 'traditional version' because I usually play it in a medley of two song (Liling & Pemung Jae)
