NPCSCs' decision to unseat 4 moderate democratic lawmakers came after the US election, showing that Beijing is still very keen on going after democratic activists and will not spare professional elites.

As hawkish as it showed 4 years ago, this time Beijing horrendously bypassed HK's judiciary and legislature when enforcing the order. The latest decision effectively bans disqualified candidates from running in upcoming elections, basically sweeping all prospective democratic candidates out of the door. I think it is a manifest declaration of Beijing to abandon the promises enshrined in the Joint Declaration.

More worrying is a plot paving ways put more democratic activists under National Security Law. Accusing candidates including myself of ‘soliciting interference by foreign governments' with fabricated allegations, the four lawmakers were banned from running the election in July. They are now unseated on the same ground. Should arrest follow, it would be a total war aiming at eradicating dissents.

🇹🇼One of Taiwan’s most prominent China-friendly politicians was recalled as mayor of the self-ruled island’s third-largest city—the second electoral setback in five months for Taiwanese advocates of a more accommodating posture toward Beijing.
台灣最知名的親中政治人物之一，同時作為台灣第三大城高雄市長韓國瑜遭民眾罷免，這是五個月以來對韓國瑜及其他提倡對北京持更加包容態度的台灣人來說第二次的選舉挫敗。

🧑‍🦲The same man lost both times: The recalled mayor, Han Kuo-yu of the main opposition Nationalist Party, failed to unseat Taiwan’s incumbent leader, Tsai Ing-wen, in January’s presidential election. Now voters in the southern port city of Kaohsiung have passed a recall motion removing Mr. Han from office, according to Taiwan’s Central Election Commission.
