▍週末要結束了，捨不得睡嗎？一個從十歲就為失眠症所苦的歌手，寫出了什麼樣的音樂？

當人們談起臥室音樂這個詞，想像遠處不知名小房間裡的溫馨、私密與低傳真的如夢聲響，Jacob Allen 的臥室卻是他音樂裡那份爆裂躁動的溫床。從十歲起，他就飽受慢性失眠之苦，不能入睡加上抑鬱症使他的面孔看起來始終蒼白。2015 年，他的姊姊自殺未遂，幾年後他寫了〈Velvet Leaves〉這首歌，憶及姊姊尋死的那一天：

後來，失眠的時候他就寫歌。出道單曲〈Want Me〉、EP《Blood Loss》時期的歌曲幾乎都在他睡不著的夜晚誕生、在自己倫敦的房間裡錄製。以音樂人的身份活動時，他叫自己 Puma Blue，至於為什麼，他提到好幾個原因：他想要一個和 Muddy Waters、Lead Belly、Howlin' Wolf、Memphis Minnie 這種藍調音樂人的名字；他從小對音樂的感覺就是藍色的；曾經有人幫他取了 Blue 的綽號；

「Puma」則來自他的想像人格：一個在酒吧裡半醉，半人半虎，散發著威士忌味道的人。

在 EP《Blood Loss》發行後，Puma Blue 這個名字已然發光發熱。那年四月，他開始了自己在歐洲的第一次巡演。即便那幾年英國爵士樂風的興盛使許多音樂人亟於加入這個潮流，Puma Blue 卻非常不願意以爵士來標籤自己的音樂。即便如此，他作品中優雅的薩克斯風即興與吉他和弦的挑選，卻常常讓人忽略他作品中同時也帶有嘻哈、靈魂樂和藍調的特徵。

最讓人難忘的還有他的嗓音。發語時駕馭鬼魅輕柔的假音，但偶爾爆出如激昂痛苦的嘶吼；精彩如《Blood Loss》中的〈Bruise Cruise〉，情緒從反覆的 A 段累積，直到最後內爆於朦朧迴盪的吉他音色與脫序的薩克斯風聲線中。Puma Blue 自陳自己的歌唱受到 Jeff Buckley 的大量影響，而他的聲音表現確實讓人想起這位早逝的美國創作歌手。

在 COVID-19 疫情爆發前後，Puma Blue 終於公佈他的第一張專輯正在製作中的消息。這段期間，他遇見了他的愛人 Olivia，而長年困擾著他的失眠症竟因愛情而緩減。原先，他預計跟隨愛人搬往亞特蘭大，然而全球的旅遊禁令隨後降臨，他留在倫敦完成了這張名為《In Praise of Shadows》的作品。

這個名稱以英文表記或許陌生，其實正是借用自日本作家谷崎潤一郎的名作《陰翳禮讚》。

「這部作品在美學上和負面情緒上，都深深影響了我。同時，它同時也隱喻了在黑暗中尋找光芒。」聆聽《In Praise of Shadows》，確實立刻能意識到 Puma Blue 的改變：過往沉鬱的旋律線變得更為清晰明亮（或許也與他終於付得起錄音室有關），吉他甚至出現了像〈Silk Print〉這樣帶點神聖感的鋪陳；而專輯中最具突破性的〈Oil Slick〉，以炫巧的鼓點與迷幻的旋律，展示了 Puma Blue 對快節奏的高超駕馭。

失眠的小男孩不再瀕臨崩潰，找到愛的同時找到了睡眠，或許正如他在〈Sleeping〉中以快節奏的鼓機表現得那樣雀躍。「十九到二十二歲之間，我每天最多睡兩到三個小時。但現在，我常常想『原來其他人一直都擁有那麼多精力嗎？』我覺得自己像個超級英雄。」
