　　不久前跟網友討論到雪豹(Panthera uncia)的飼養問題，他以為許多低緯度、海拔的國家，是因為氣溫的限制而沒辦法飼養雪豹。但其實，對許多高原、凍苔的物種而言，最主要的問題反而在於濕度、黴菌！因為只要不是連續的極端高溫，配合適當的降溫措施，就算在室外，雪豹通常也是可以熬過去的。

那麼反過來說，若想在高緯度地區飼養熱帶物種，氣溫會變成關鍵嗎？

　　只談哺乳類的話，熱帶地區的物種，只要體型夠大能儲存足夠熱量(通常也就是活動需求大，需要外放的那些)，通常都不會太怕冷。像非洲象(Loxodonta africana)對於5°C能夠處之泰然，(當然時間不能太長，室內溫度得盡量保持在13°C以上)；反而因為散熱困難，只要高溫超過38°C就容易有熱緊迫的風險！而像細紋斑馬(Equus grevyi)、各式羚羊這類草食獸以及獅子(Panthera leo)、美洲虎(Panthera onca)等獵食者，即使在下雪的時候通常也能夠外放；河馬(Hippopotamus amphibius)甚至有過睡在雪中的紀錄，更不用提黑猩猩(Pan troglodytes)、小象等好奇心強的動物，與智人(Homo sapiens)幼體一樣，對雪的興趣往往超過對寒冷的恐懼，常常玩雪玩的不亦樂乎。

換句話說，在配套措施完善的情況下，是不用擔心動物因為低溫而適應困難的。

　　當然，並不是因為這樣就能把動物丟在雪中不管。要是條件允許，在天氣寒冷時最好能夠開放活動場與室內的連結，讓動物自由選擇想待的場所，活動力旺盛的可以趁機玩雪玩個過癮；比較怕冷的個體也不會因此著涼，最重要的是──動物有了選擇的空間，行為會因此而多樣化、減少圈養造成的緊迫與刻板，展現出牠們最真實的一面！為了讓動物在各種情況下都能獲得滿足而絞盡腦汁，正是一個好動物園該做的。有與原棲地環境相符的展區固然好，但那並不是唯一令動物展現自我的答案。

　　而最後回答一下大家應該都會有的問題──
為什麼我們要在氣候不適宜的地區飼養這些物種呢？
除了增進當地人民對生命了解的教育意涵外，這同時也是族群管理中很重要的一環，「分散風險」，隨著現代社會交流越發頻繁，在貿易的過程中，難保不會因衛生管理疏失或有心人士操作使得外來病原入侵，引發大規模的傳染病。這時，倘若我們把雞蛋都放在同一個籃子裡，意味的可能就是基因多樣性甚至一個物種的消亡！但若是在其他地區做好衛星族群的安排，就能有效防範這樣的慘劇上演。

很長的p.s.比如野外僅存600匹極度瀕危的非洲野驢(Equus africanus)，300多匹的圈養個體全數集中在歐美國家。為了避免上述情形發生，台北動物園就成了發展亞洲地區族群的第一站，目前也成功的繁殖了兩匹幼崽，替衛星族群的建立打下良好基礎。
