Known for its many Instagrammable spots, Matanoi Hill is located about a 25-minute drive away from Keningau town. There are three trails that lead to the peak and each trail offers different challenges that cater to all fitness levels.

We went on a guided walk with X-Trekkers for our S.A.D. last weekend and explored the Queenstown area. Undeniably, the highlight was walking through the forest and finding this ‘lost ark’ in the middle of nowhere! Apparently someone had converted this huge fallen trunk over a water body into a chill deck, complete with steps, chairs and even an BBQ pit. Ingenious! 😆

We also learned more about Tanglin Halt, Singapore’s first satellite town, trekked briefly along the Green Corridor, soaked in the tranquility at Wessex Estate and gawked at the huge colonial bungalows. We trekked through the rice terraces in Sapa, visited some exclusive spots and saw 0 tourists on the way ! It was definitely one of the best days of our trip in Vietnam. On our last day, we visited the highest mountain in Vietnam (& Indochina), Fansipan (3143m above sea level).

Bắt đầu bằng 2km đi bộ dưới tán cây của khu rừng nhiệt đới, tiếp đến là 8km liên tục leo lên những dốc cao để vượt qua 5 ngọn núi đá. Có những lúc chân tay mỏi nhừ, nhưng ở đâu đấy một cái cây cổ thụ xuất hiện, tiếng vượn hú, chim hót, hay một chú nhện to đủ sắc màu lại làm cho cả đoàn như bừng tỉnh. Thiên nhiên thực sự diệu kỳ.

Cũng có những đoạn đi bộ qua thảm thực vật tầng thấp cao ngang ngực, cũng có đoạn đi qua thảm thực vật cao hơn đầu người, lá nào lá đấy to che hết nắng... tuyến đường trekking này thực sự lôi cuốn đối với bất cứ ai yêu thiên nhiên, yêu cây cỏ.

Khi ngôi làng Việt Hải hiện ra trước mắt, vừa đúng lúc nước hết, bụng ai cũng réo liên hồi, hành trình đi bộ đã kết thúc bằng những giây phút nghỉ ngơi.

Cuối cùng cả nhóm đạp xe xuyên làng Việt Hải ra bến tàu, trở về vịnh Lan Hạ, nhảy tùm xuống biển để "refresh" (làm tươi mới) lại thân thể đã mệt nhoài sau nửa ngày leo núi.

The 10 km trekking tour across Cat Ba National Park was a challenge which offered experience that definitely worthed the while and the effort ?‍♂️

It was quite an easy start with 2 km walking under the canopy of the rain forest, followed by 8 km of continuous hiking up and down high slopes to cross over 5 rocky mountains. There were time when arms and legs were tired and heavy. Then somewhere along the route an ancient tree appeared, monkeys howling, birds singing or a large colorful spider weaving a web made the whole group awake and enthralled. Nature is truly wonderful!

We trekked through some sections of understory layer at breast height, some sections of canopy trees with leaves so big that sunlight could hardly get through. This trekking route is truly attractive to anyone who loves nature, loves the plants and animals.

After nearly 5 hours of trekking, the Viet Hai village appeared before the eyes, just when water ran out and stomaches were roaring. The hiking part of the tour ended with moments of well-earned rest and a delicious traditional local meal.

For the last legs of the tour, we took the bicycles through Viet Hai village to the pier to return to Cat Ba Town via Lan Ha Bay. On the way, we had the opportunity of jumping into the sea to "refresh" our tired body after half a day of hiking and cycling.

The tour was such an interesting experience not to be missed when traveling to Cat Ba. Many thanks to Langur's Adventures for this wonderful experience.

Crank up the volume for music and see the Annapurna Circuit through the eyes of a mischievous 11-year old boy. Watch us deteriorate as we drag ourselves over Thorong La 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). We trekked around Annapurna in Nepal with Lionel over Christmas (yes, boy with long hair!). Lionel was really determined to make it and was actually faster and stronger than his parents ... We were all pushed to our limits and left gasping for breath the day we crossed the high pass – but felt a real sense of achievement.

The Annapurna Circuit is widely regarded as one of the top 10 treks in the world. It has an incredible variety of landscapes. You start below 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) in rice paddies and banana plantations, go through pine forests, past Tibetan Buddhist villages, before tackling the high altitude pass of Thorong La. On the other side, you discover the high altitude desert of Mustang and the deepest valley in the world, the Kali Gandaki.

Lots of research and training went into this two-week trek. We love the great outdoors, and Lionel has been a keen hiker from a very young age. We’ve taken several family trips to the Tibetan plateau in winter, and Kirk and I trekked to the Gokyo Lakes in the Everest region 13 years ago. But this was the first time we tackled such a challenge as a family.

Most travel agencies recommend you should not take children above 3,000 meters (9,840 feet). We looked into easier options, including the Annapurna Sanctuary and Kopra Danda – but Lionel was very keen to scale Thorong La. And we felt he was ready to do it, and we had the experience to guarantee his safety. We played it safe, hiring a guide and two porters to help us -- and we would not have been able to make it carrying all the gear ourselves.

Winter offers clear blue skies and stunning views of the Himalayas. You only meet a handful of people every day, and it's easy to get a room in lodges. A total of 60 people crossed Thorong La on Dec 27, and only 30 the next day.

On the down side, it's bitterly cold at night in unheated lodges. And snow storms can cross the pass at any time. This would mean waiting for a few days for the pass to reopen, or turn back and hike for a week.

This is a high altitude trek. Best to resist the temptation to take the jeep road high up, as you increase your risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. Give yourself time to acclimatise, and watch out for signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or worse - HAPE or HACE. It is also essential to have proper equipment to trek in snow, not just for yourself, but for your porters and guide, if you have them.
Remember that over 40 people died around Thorong La on October 14, 2014 when a massive snowstorm hit the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Mustang areas. Hiking at that altitude always carries a risk.

We organised this trek through Friends in High Places Himalayan Trekking, who provided a guide (Pasang Dawa Sherpa) and two porters (Sonny and Pinju). We would not have been able to complete this trek without them.
