BLOCKADE: This is the environmental frontline! Welcome back to Malaysia #KantaPortraits

REPOST from #GeraiOA UPDATE: After four months of setting up a series of blockades to try and save what's left of their traditional territories, the Temiar of Gua Musang, Kelantan are now on heightened alert.
Several days ago, the private company intent on planting 'Musang King' cloned durians on 400 hectares of traditional territories of Pos Simpor turned up at the Kaleg blockade, on the road to Pos Tohoi and beyond. While they had tried to cajole the Temiar previously, this time they were much more confrontational and worse, used their 4WDs (seen here) to block the road - and did not allow ANY cars to access the villages beyond. We Volunteers were also stranded there on Saturday afternoon (28/7). This is unlike the Kaleg blockade, which only screens vehicles to stop loggers & mega plantation companies while villagers, traders & government officials are free to pass through.
Yesterday (29/7), things escalated again when a "stewong" (timber hauler) was brought in by the Musang King company to block the road again, along with their 4WDs. Unfortunately even a vehicle sent to ferry a patient to the hospital was denied entry - an act which is not only cruel but illegal.

We are also worried about food supplies in the villages beyond the blockade as traders and villagers are not able to drive through the area - except for those on motorcycles.

More Temiar from the interiors have come to the Kaleg blockade in a show of support. Food supplies at the blockade is running low yet they've persevered, they're defending in the dark (with a few donated solar lights). They're even putting up with flash floods from recent rains. The least we Malaysians can do is to help publicise their plight as their fight for a forested nation is one that will benefit all of us in the long run.

I am so blessed to have a career that helps me connect with people and places. I take pride in what I do and proud of the diversity of people, culture, food, and many more my country has to offer.
