This wasn’t going to be the tweet I picked to share today, and then this morning I was sent a video that hit a nerve 👿 Two dudes who knew nothing about exercise, talking about this trainer they had and how AMAYYZZINNGGG he was. “He knew exercises I’d never even SEEN before!” Cue a man claiming to have created exercises he didn’t, and teaching movements that required more irrelevant coordination than they did force production 🤡 - ... we’ve turned fitness into a novelty competition. He who does the most ridiculous shit must knoweth the most. Almost everyone isn’t as jacked as they wish they were, and are constantly looking for The Secret to why. It couldn’t possibly be their suboptimal technique, lacklustre intensity or irregular gym attendance 🤔 It must be the lack of exercise complexity. - It’s not always intentional spreading of misinformation. Sometimes people just have injuries to work around 🤷🏻‍♂️ I can’t do the eccentric portion of a “hammer” curl because for some reason my right elbow clicks uncomfortably. Anyone might look at me and assume because I’ve got coach written on my back it’s for some reason bedded in wisdom 🧐 - And no, you can’t “shock” your muscles. They’re contractile fibres that perform the role of shortening and creating internal compressive load 💪🏽 If you’ve seen hypertrophy results in a muscle through doing a new movement, it’s because you’ve either improved the manner in which you take it through it’s contractile range, you’ve placed more load or bias on it, or changed the way the resistance profile you’re using loads it. You haven’t made it jump excitedly into growth 😮 - Probably the biggest takeaway last week’s students of RTS Level 1 told me they had was that it shone a light on how absurd so many of the exercises you see online are 🤦🏻‍♂️ The problem is, ridiculous is what sells. The general public (and large swathes of the exercise community) don’t know how to tell what makes an exercise suboptimal, let alone detrimental. If the person demonstrating it is confident and jacked, it must be good 🤨 - I can’t wait to be a part of changing this. We’ve let the first batch of woke coaches out into the wild... spread the word.

📍Massachusetts (USA) 🇺🇸 ⁣ What’s the coldest place you’ve ever been to? ⁣ Can you smell how crisp the air is? It was also bone-shatteringly cold - 🥶 30 F (just below 0 C) feels just as fresh and stingy on my face as I remember! There are ZERO “Instagram spots” in the classical sense here - so you’ve got to get creative with Mother Nature! ⁣ Life has been funny lately. I’ve been in the USA for about 2.5 weeks now and I’ve finally settled into a rhythm and a routine. Part of that routine involves 3-4x weekly walks with my parents in a nearby “reservation” - big swathes of land with hiking trails, ponds, and lakes.
