CW: Behind me is the dress I wore the night I was raped. We displayed it during the United Nations General Assembly at our meeting with the President of Sierra Leone. A common question survivors get asked after their assault is, “what were you wearing?” This question is victim blaming - the notion that survivors bear responsibility for the violence inflicted upon us because our outfits attracted perpetrators. These dresses are meant to juxtapose the unfair shame rape survivors face against the prestige surrounding UNGA, an event that gathers the world’s most powerful people. Our dresses represents more than evidence at the time of our rape. Over 300,000 people around the world have called on the UN to pass access to justice for survivors. Sierra Leone’s President, President Bio answered that call. We are grateful to him as he made his remarks yesterday to the world to lead a simple but profound call to action: Pass this resolution and leave no survivors behind. Today the @risenow.us team is in NYC for the United Nations General Assembly where the President of Sierra Leone will address the world about why his country is championing our UNGA Survivors resolution. Before last week’s approval, survivor rights outside of war weren’t considered an official UNGA issue. That leaves behind millions upon millions of rape survivors like me who are raped outside of war. Peace is not the absence of visible conflict. In order for there to be true peace, survivors must have access to justice regardless of the country they are in. We still have work ahead to pass the rights in the UNGA Resolution. Over 317,000 people from around the world have signed our @changedotorg petition to demand that world leaders pass this resolution. To all our supporters, thank you. Together we have placed this issue on the world agenda. Now, let’s go all the way.
