No one is able to walk out after dining there. Just ask my makan kakis - newbies @safarislim, @eechong and @blackmamba1507, and “repeat offender” @momofuku. They will concur our dinner left us in a state of stupefied satisfaction, with perhaps, a few new stretch marks on our bellies 😂 We definitely brought our A-game appetites (I warned them to come hungry) and did very well, demolishing most of the dishes to the point that the containers of leftovers to take home were the least I’d ever seen! @nonyabong private dining is famous for serving authentic, traditional Peranakan cuisine (Uncle Jeffrey’s cooking tastes the closest to what I grew up eating at home) and it was the a la carte route I’d chosen for this meal. You can however, pick one of their three available set menus (humorously named “Eat Until Pain”, “Eat Until Pengsan”, and “Eat Until Blessed”), or the 17-course Omakase. For the benefit of the first-timers, before the food started appearing, Uncle Jeffrey did a formal introduction, and showed his precious book of recipes handwritten by his mother. After which, it was a blur of shiokness as Elizabeth (@icookyoueatishiok) brought out one course after another: 1. Kueh Pie Tee - Everything about the one at Nonya Bong’s, shell included, is made from scratch, and each person gets two pieces. 2. Itek Tim - Also known as Kiam Chye Duck, I regard theirs as the best I’ve had outside of my parents’ home. On its own, the soup is already divine - boldly tangy and “gao” (concentrated), the result of being simmered for 8 hours. But because it’s garnished with sautéed garlic and served with brandy and fresh cut green chillies to add as you please, it is on another level altogether. 3. Sambal Belimbing - Surprisingly, a few of the guys voted this as one of their top dishes. I didn’t expect that as it stars the face-puckeringly sour fruit in a spicy rempah. It was interesting to hear from @blackmamba1507 that there’s nothing quite like it in Indonesian cuisine. 4. Sambal Hati - I am a huge fan of innards, so this item featuring chicken gizzard and chicken liver in a thick, aromatic rempah is a must-have. ⬇️Continued in Comments⬇️
