ใครจะรู้ว่าเรื่องราวปริศนาของตู้เกม Polybius จะถูกนำไปใส่เป็น Easter Egg ของตัวอย่างซีรีส์ Loki ซีรีส์ใหม่ของทาง Marvel โดยเจ้าตู้นี้ โผล่ให้เห็นแบบแว่บเดียวในตัวอย่าง

เอาเป็นว่าถ้าไม่สังเกตดี ๆ หรือไม่รู้เรื่องราวของเจ้าตู้นี้มาก่อน คุณก็คงพลาดมันไปอย่างน่าเสียดาย แต่ก่อนจะไปไกลกว่านี้ เรามาย้อนดูกันดีกว่าว่า เรื่องราวของ Polybius มันน่ากลัวขนาดไหน และทำไมมันถึงมีอิทธิพลขนาดไปโผล่ในซีรีส์กระแสหลักของโลก

เรื่องราวของ Polybius เริ่มขึ้นครั้งแรกในปี 2003 ในนิตยสารเกม Gamepro ฉบับเดือนกันยายน ปี 2003 โดยมีการเผยแพร่บทความเกี่ยวกับตำนานเกมตู้ Polybius โดยมีหัวข้อชื่อว่า “Secret and Lies” โดยอ้างอิงจากเจ้าของเว็บไซต์ coinop.org คุณ Kurt Koller ที่มาหน้าที่รวบรวมสินค้าเกมอาร์เคดในยุคนั้น ซึ่งหัวข้อนี้เป็นที่น่าสนใจเป็นอย่างในหมู่เกมเมอร์ และเพราะเนื้อหาบทความดังกล่าวในลงท้ายบทว่าเป็นเรื่องราวที่ยังหาบทพิสูจน์ไม่ได้ จึงเป็นแรงผลักดันให้เกมเมอร์สืบหาความจริง พร้อมกระจายข่าว และเต็มไปด้วยข่าวลวงแอบอ้างมากมายไปทั่ววงการเกมในยุคนั้น

เกมเมอร์ต่างได้สืบสวนเกม Polybius ทุกอย่างที่เชื่อมต่อกับเกม ตั้งแต่ชื่อเกมที่อ้างอิงมาจากนักประวัติศาสตร์ชาวกรีกโบราณตามที่ชื่อว่า Polybius ผู้ที่ให้นิยามแก่นักประวัติศาสตร์ว่า “ไม่ควรให้สัมภาษณ์กับพยาน ถ้าหากข้อมูลยังไม่ได้รับการยืนยันอย่างเป็นทางการ”

ส่วนชื่อบริษัทผู้ผลิตเกม Sinneslöschen อ้างอิงจากนักประพันธ์ชาวอเมริกัน คุณ Brian Dunning กล่าวว่าเป็นคำที่คนไม่ได้พูดภาษาเยอรมันเป็นภาษาแม่ได้สร้างคำนี้ขึ้นมาเอง โดยคำว่า Sinne แปลว่า Senses กับ löschen แปลว่า to extinguish หรือ to delete ในภาษาอังกฤษ ซึ่งแปลเป็นไทยว่า “เซนต์แห่งการลบ” ซึ่งผิดหลักไวยากรณ์ภาษาเยอรมัน

ส่วนความเชื่อว่า Polybius ครอบครองโดยรัฐบาล CIA : อ้างอิงจากเว็บไซต์ Snopes.com ที่รวบรวมหลักฐานและเปิดโปงข่าวลือที่น่าเชื่อถือ ได้กล่าวไว้ว่าในช่วงปี 1980 มีกลุ่ม Men in Black ได้เข้ามาแวะเยี่ยมร้านอาร์เคดและแอบตั้งค่าบันทึกคะแนนสูงสุดในเกม Polybius ไว้ ซึ่งมีสันนิษฐานว่าทางรัฐบาลมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องโดยเป็นหัวหอกในการทดลองลับอะไรบางอย่างและได้ส่งรหัสลับแก่ผู้เล่น
