I get a lot of questions about what kind of scales I use to improvise. It's hard to talk about this in under a minute but the basic idea is that I rarely think in terms of scales. This, of course, depends on the style of music, as certain styles do place more emphasis on scales but for bebop or swing, it is more language and vocabulary based. I basically spent countless hours carefully listening to my favorite players and figuring out their vocabulary. I also learned a lot of tunes and committed them to memory. After a while, the sound is just in your head. It's very much like learning a language. I didn't go to jazz school (though I wish I did), I mainly learned on my own and did have some private teachers here and there, and the best teachers were the ones who told me to do it on own. Ironically, at that time, I thought the lessons weren't very good because they didn't show me anything, we just played tunes but ultimately they were right: I shouldn't expect to be spoon fed information, I have to go out and figure things out for myself to have a deeper connection to the music.
