Flooding is a common disaster in Malaysia. However, this can be mitigated with the help of Mangrove trees. Mangroves with aerial roots will reduce the impact of tidal waves in shallow water more rapidly than those without. The roots, trunks and canopy of mangroves also act as a buffer against storm surges and in turn help lessen property damage and therefore protecting the livelihoods of local communities living by the shore. Mangrove forests also provide society with a range of other 'ecological services'. These include preventing coastal erosion, protecting coral reefs from silting up, and providing a source of timber, food and traditional medicines.
