My Siddi documentary team still keeps in touch on WhatsApp although the last we seee of each other was January 2019. And since then, I’ve lost most of my documentary bts pictures. (as in behind the scenes not Jungkook). And so the kind Raasid, Whatsapp me the photos we took in the mountains that we took and I’m so grateful. I’m gonna upload them all on IG with the hashtag #FizaOtravels #documentingmydocumentary in any case I change my phone for the millionth time.

500 years ago, thousands of Africans were brought to India to work. Some were performers, craftsmen but mostly as slaves.
And when the law against slavery was passed, thousands of them fled into the forests, mountains to try to build their own lives. The Siddi people as they call themselves now speak Kannada, eat and dress like a regular a South Indian living in Karnataka, Hubli.

Though they try to assimilate themselves with the locals, the Siddi (of African Descent) still face discrimination and employment challenges.

We spent the whole day at the top of the mountain with the 75 year old Mahadewi who is a Siddi (Indian African). You all wont believe it, but I saw her 6 packs ab.
She is that strong this woman.

But that's not what we are there for. We were there to hear her story as a woman from the Siddi community who has had her land stolen. Not any ordinary land, but a sprawling 5 acres full of healthy plantation left behind by her husband.

The team filmed with her today and we cannot wait to share with you how she was bullied with false contracts to force her out of her home. And how she isnt the only Siddi who has faced it and or is facing it.
