Cassone (2017) This piece is the conclusion of the journey with my parents before we move on to the next stage in our lives. With my parents retiring next year, I wanted to create something to commemorate the ending of a chapter and the moment a new one unfolds. I decided to go back to my hometown last Diwali and took street rubbings of the places that was personal to my family, our home, streets in Penang, our favourite restaurant,etc. I layered each rubbing onto their portraits, my mum with her eyes open and my dad with his eyes shut. It was poignant to me to know that although I don't see them as often nowadays, their lives were the ones that shaped the facticity of my journey as an individual and artist. There are other symbolism that I had added into this piece but I guess I'll just keep it as a family secret. Cheers.

Walk 1: Navaratri An experiment on another common usage of paper, rubbings. I wanted to recreate the active participation of walking through a space in a past moment and found rubbings of objects provide the best platform. Just like in zen paintings, the abstract is used to allow the viewer to imagine themselves completing the scenario mentioned. For this experiment, I took rubbings of objects that were used for the celebrations of Navaratri on round orange paper. My favourite piece is the platter with Ganesha embossed into it. You can still see the swastikas.
