Lucy Laucht – Summer in Cornwall

The British coastline, offering an endless ocean to the right and the rolling green hills of England to the left, always held a special reverence for Lucy Laucht and her family. Through a "Summer in Cornwall," Lucy retraced old steps and rediscovered her country, seeing it all in a new light. Click for more: https://bit.ly/2HEAVKB

Here is a beautiful Malaysian story. Her name is Lalitha.

I lost my wallet yesterday out of my own complete stupidity of leaving it on top of the car while pumping petrol and I drove off with the wallet on top of my car. So, it must've fallen off somewhere along the road right after the petrol station. I only realised it was missing about an hour later and was super frantic when I found out it was gone. Phoebe was with me and we both started praying fervently in the car. Retraced my steps back to the petrol station. Had Phoebe and myself ask every petrol attendant, CCTV footage and checked all the longkangs, including walking 1 kilometer on the road ahead after the petrol station to look for it. Nothing. My heart sank.

After almost an hour of asking and looking, we accepted it was gone and did all the necessary (calling all the banks to cancel the card immediately, filing a police report, etc). Needless to say, our mood was just bleh and I was particularly frustrated (with God and myself).

Today, as I was preparing to go and make a new IC, I received a call from my insurance company from this lady called Aina and she asked whether I lost my wallet yesterday. I said yes and asked how did she know? Well, Lalitha tried every way (Facebook, Messenger, insurance company, calling the stamp collection kopitiam card) in an effort to reach me. She reached out to the insurance company, and Aina who was professional not to reveal my details agreed to take Lalita's number and pass it to me so that I can call Lalita myself. And that's what Aina did this afternoon.

I took Lalita's number down and thanked Aina for facilitating this which was completely out of her job scope. I called the number Aina gave me and Lalita picked up. She told me the whole story of how she found my wallet exactly along the road after the petrol station and have been doing everything she can to reach me. She even offered to come and pass it back to me. Obviously, I told her to stay where she is and I would come. Mind you, she mentioned she was a motorcyclist. We agreed to meet the petrol station where it all happened.

Today evening, I went to meet her to collect my wallet. About 10 mins later, she came bumbling on her humble motorcycle. We talked a little bit and she quickly handed over my wallet to me, with everything intact. I thanked her profusely and offered her a reward. She vehemently rejected it but I insisted anyway. And just like that, I have my wallet back with me, safe and sound. I asked for her permission to take this photo because I told her, she's an angel and a hero. And she deserves all the recognition.

So from one Malaysian to another, thank you Lalitha and Aina. God bless you! 🇲🇾😊

70 years ago, our grandparents left their respective hometowns in China to seek a better life in Singapore.
70 years later, we retraced their footsteps, in search of our roots - discovering stories we’ve never heard, and meeting family we never knew we had.
The distant-yet-familiar places that seemed to only exist in folktales, are about to unfold right before our eyes - the Legendary Hometown.
