Granted, the hatred might be based on a lack of understanding, but when we hate something that blinds us. Hate prevents us from understanding something because our emotions guide how we see things.  So often the hate will preceed, reinforce and perpetuate the lack of understanding. Since understanding something requires getting to know it, the hatred of it stops us from even trying to understand it.
